For those of you who weren't able to make it to our December 2024 online meeting, it is already available on YouTube here:
It was a wonderful holiday-themed meeting featuring some interesting conversations and a very good presentation on the song "White Christmas" by Pantelis. Happy holidays everyone from Tennessee, and I hope you all enjoy this fifteenth ICC online meeting!

Fred Allen's gentle, sophisticated and cerebral style was indeed similar to the slightly more expansive Benny's. I thought television was far kinder to Jack Benny, though. Did Allen radio "guest" often with Bing?
Yes, Bing and Fred Allen did appear on radio together many, many times over the years. Here are two examples:
And I do agree that Fred Allen was much better suited to the medium of radio than to that of television, though he often did a great job as panelist on the famous game show What's My Line?, hosted by one of the most soft-spoken American TV hosts of all time, Mr. John Charles Daly.
Books » What Are Your Favorite Bing Crosby Books » 14/10/2024 3:52 am |
I don't have Malcolm's book, which is invaluable of course, due to the fact that it has become impossible to find an affordable copy anywhere no matter how hard one may try. Fortunately, its content is available on the ICC website and has been extremely helpful for my articles and occasional research on Bing. A few years ago I recorded this video in which I speak at length about my favorite books on Bing and show the copies I have. In case you're interested, here it is:

I've always felt that for a far shorter period, Eric Morecambe of the not too US familiar comedy double act of Morecambe and Wise, was held in similar UK affection. His headlined death, ten years after Benny's and aged only fifty-eight, had the UK mourning over its national court jester.
I am aware of Morecambe and Wise mostly because the Beatles appeared on their TV show at the very beginning of Beatlemania in the UK, and their skits with the Fab Four were really hilarious. It's obvious the lads are having a great time and that they admired the comedy duo. I agree, Ian, that there is something really contemporary about Jack Benny's conversational style that makes his brand of comedy stand the test of time, especially the stuff he did on his top-rated radio show. I feel more or less the same about Fred Allen, who was another extremely witty comedian of the golden age of radio in this country.
Personal Life » Kathryn Crosby » 13/10/2024 5:58 am |
Yes, Kathryn Crosby's passing did receive quite a bit of media attention here in the US, even though I am talking about web-based media, since I rarely watch the news (or anything else other than sports, really) on regular TV. As some of you have stated on this thread, Kathryn's death is all the sadder because it's yet another link to Bing that departs this Earth, and she was someone who really knew him very well and shared his life for over two decades. Requiescat in pace.
On an unrelated note (though mentioned on this thread), I was living in Spain when Frank Sinatra passed away and remember that it was front-page news there and throughout Europe, and that very evening there were several radio stations that were airing tributes to Frank, one of which I actually taped off the air, though unfortunately I have since lost the cassette tape.
Artistic Legacy » DONALD CLARKE ON BING'S INFLUENCE ON FRANK SINATRA » 13/10/2024 5:46 am |
Dear all,
I've realized that my original post that started this thread is now a decade old, and in the interim, I had the chance to interview Donald Clarke about his Sinatra book, and at some point during the conversation, he does mention Bing. Mr. Clarke's All or Nothing at All is one of my favorite books on Sinatra, so interviewing him was a great honor for me. If you're interested, here's the link to the recording of the interview, which I did back in 2021:

Recording » El Senor Bing » 13/10/2024 5:39 am |
While El Señor Bing is definitely not one of Bing's best albums, the Billy May arrangements are still interesting in some instances, and the studio band is top notch. The main problem, to me, is that the charts seem to be done assuming that cha-cha-cha is the only existing Latin musical form, which is really why the album becomes boring rather quickly. I am not too fond of the marriage of two songs either and believe the record would have been better had Bing taken one tune at a time. Had Crosby and May attempted to do a Latin album that encompassed other styles of Latin music as well, it most definitely would have been a much more satisfying effort. Bing and May didn't really go Latin on this album, as the alternate title suggests, but rather they simply went cha-cha-cha...

Artistic Legacy » MALCOLM'S VIDEO FOOTAGE OF THE 2002 BING CONFERENCE AT HOFSTRA » 07/1/2024 11:00 pm |
Dear all,
Malcolm has been kind enough to send me a 45-minute-long video including some very interesting footage that he himself shot at the 2002 Hofstra conference. It's mostly snippets of many of the panels and of many of the contributors who participated and/or performed at the conference, but it offers a great picture of what the conference was like for those of us who weren't lucky enough to be there. The video is now available on YouTube, and you may watch it here:
Thanks, Malcolm, for making this fantastic audiovisual document available to everyone!
Best,

I've really enjoyed seeing everyone again during this January 2024 online meeting, and now I am finally back on the CFW forum. After thinking a little hard, I was able to come up with my sign-in credentials, so I should be able to start contributing to the forum again in the near future!
Thanks to Jason for putting these online meetings together and to everyone who shows up month after month!

Film » YEARLY BING CROSBY PODCAST - BING AS AN ACTOR » 22/12/2022 10:41 pm |
Dear all,
This is the seventh year in a row that at the beginning of December, Malcolm and I sit down (via Zoom) and discuss an aspect of Bing's life and career. This time around we've tackled the topic of Bing Crosby's career as an actor. What made him special on screen? In what ways did he evolve as an actor? What was our introduction to Bing as an actor? What lesser-known Bing films are worth checking out? If you're interested, you may access the podcast (it is a videocast this time, with both sound and image) by clicking on the link below:
Once again, we've had a great time chatting about Bing, and we hope you all enjoy this episode! If you have any comments, questions, or suggestions for future podcasts, please let us know!
Happy holidays everyone!
Anton.

Dear all,
For the past several years, Malcolm and I have been recording a Bing Crosby podcast every December. It is just a casual conversation about a Bing-related topic, and this year it's a videocast about how Bing's voice changed throughout the decades. If you're snowbound or there's a bus strike or somethin', perhaps you would like to check it out. Here's the link to it:
I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a happy and safe holiday season wherever you may be!

New and Re-issued materials » VIDEO - AN ESSENTIAL BING CROSBY BIBLIOGRAPHY » 01/7/2021 7:49 pm |
Dear all,
I have recently written an article for BING Magazine in which I discuss my favorite Bing Crosby books. It will appear in the upcoming issue of the magazine, which Malcolm tells me has been sent to the printer recently.
Today I used some of the research that I did for that article to record a video in which I talk about what I consider to be the best books on Bing, and I show my copies of some of them to the camera. If you're interested, here it is:
As always, thanks for your attention and for your interest in all things Bing!

Recording » VIDEOCAST - Our Favorite Bing Crosby Songs » 15/12/2020 2:38 am |
Dear all,
It seems hard to believe, but Malcolm Macfarlane and I have been doing our yearly Bing Crosby podcast for half a decade now! This fifth installment isn't only audio either—it features video and is an hour-long conversation about our favorite Bing Crosby songs. First we pick five favorites each, and then we go on to select three lesser-known numbers that we deem worthy of rediscovery. If you are interested in watching our conversation, you will find it here:
We hope you find it interesting, as Bing would say, if you're snowbound or there's a bus strike or something. Links to each one of our song choices appear under the video itself. If the mood strikes you, please let us know what your choices would be and what you think of ours!
Happy holidays everyone, and please stay safe wherever you are!
Anton.
Others of Note » AN IN-DEPTH CONVERSATION WITH ARNE FOGEL » 11/8/2020 3:17 am |
As part of my series of Jazz Flashes podcasts, today I had the pleasure to talk for more than an hour and a half with singer and broadcaster Arne Fogel, who is also an ICC member. We spend a bunch of time discussing Bing and his contributions to American music and culture, among many other things, so I thought perhaps this would be interesting to members of this forum. If so, here's the link to the entire conversation:
Thanks everyone for your attention and please stay safe and healthy wherever you may be!

Hello everyone,
I recently got the new 2-CD Philco Radio Time set from Perry Huntoon here in the U.S. and what I heard on those two discs prompted me to record this video review:
I know it's a little long, but my idea was to offer an in-depth critical account of the collection.
Hope you enjoy the video!

Film » PODCAST: BING CROSBY AT THE MOVIES » 17/12/2019 1:40 am |
Dear all,
Like every year around this time, Malcolm Macfarlane and I recorded today our yearly Bing Crosby podcast. It is our fourth in the series, and this time we spent about an hour discussing Bing's film career. Towards the end of the program we also reveal our top-five Crosby movies, and we agree on almost all of them!
So, if you're snowbound this Christmas, or there's a bus strike or something (as Bing himself would say), here is the link where you may listen to our entire conversation about Bing's films:
We had a great time chatting, and as always, we hope you find it interesting. Of course, we welcome any comments you may have about the podcast.
Happy holidays everyone!

Links » THE RISE OF THE CROONERS » 06/8/2019 6:08 pm |
One of my favorite books about the art of crooning and its origins is The Rise of the Crooners (Scarecrow Press, 2002), by Michael Pitts and Frank Hoffmann et al, with a very good introduction by Ian Whitcomb. It's a book I usually don't hear much about, even though I come back to it often when writing about crooning and crooners. It has a chapter about Bing, as well as chapters on pioneering crooners such as Gene Austin, Russ Columbo, Nick Lucas, Johnny Marvin, and Rudy Vallee. I have recently uploaded a video to my YouTube channel in which I review this very valuable book. You may find it here:
Thanks, and I hope you enjoy it. But most of all, if you haven't already done so, I recommend you read this book when you get a chance.

Recording » BING CROSBY'S DUETS WITH DIXIE LEE, 1936 » 27/7/2019 8:44 pm |
Ron,
I like these two tracks as well. I find them quite charming, and in fact I listen to them quite often. I also like the classy arrangements by Victor Young. Dixie Lee was a good singer in the Ruth Etting mold, and I wish she'd made more recordings. However, I do find the duets with Bing somehow lacking a little in the chemistry that other Bing duets exude. She sounds looser on her solo sides, like "Got Me Doing Things." But as I say in my post, these are worthwhile tracks for the Crosby fan.
Recording » BING CROSBY'S DUETS WITH DIXIE LEE, 1936 » 27/7/2019 7:39 pm |
After the podcast episode I recently recorded about Dixie Lee Crosby's life and career, I've written a brief article in which I discuss the two songs Bing and Dixie recorded together in the summer of 1936. If anyone is interested, the piece is available in my blog, The Vintage Bandstand, here:
I hope it will seem interesting to forum members! If you would like to, please let me know what you all think about their two duets.

Personal Life » INTERVIEW ABOUT DIXIE LEE CROSBY » 27/7/2019 2:31 am |
Dear all,
The city of Harriman, Tennessee (about a 4-hour drive from where I live), has recently approved a historical marker to honor the memory of Bing's first wife, Dixie Lee, who was born there. The marker wouldn't have been possible without public school teacher and local East Tennessee history enthusiast Chris Hammond. On this new podcast episode, Chris and I talk at length about Dixie Lee's life and career. If you're interested in listening to our conversation, you may access it by clicking on this YouTube link:
Chris is doing extensive research on Dixie Lee and even plans to write a book about her. Please forgive my slip of the tongue when at some point I say that Irving Berlin wrote "The Way You Look Tonight." I obviously meant to say Jerome Kern, not Berlin (with Dorothy Fields, of course!).
If you have the patience to listen to the podcast episode, any comments are welcome!

My friend Kevin Bartholomew, who was my former student of Spanish at the university, gave me the chance yesterday to talk about Bing Crosby and Irving Berlin on his radio show on WCMT Radio (Martin, TN). The idea was to commemorate the 77th anniversary of Bing's classic recording of "White Christmas." My entire appearance on the show can be heard by clicking on the following link:
I hope you enjoy it! It was a very last-minute deal, because I was having breakfast when Kevin called me, and five minutes later I was appearing on the show by phone, so I didn't have any time at all to prepare...
