Re: Check this out. Funny!

actually Peter Lawford was an under rated actor he gave a good performance as ab anti semitic British army  officer in "Exodus" but as he was a dreadful singer as evidenced in "Easter Parade" , it was just as well Bing got the part of Allan A . Dale in "Robin And The Seven Hoods", ironically Bing recorded "A Fella With An Umbrella" the song that Lawford sung badly in "Easter Parade".

Re: Check this out. Funny!

Thanks, Stepo. I must try to see Lawford in that film, as out the few performances of his I have seen, they've only ever been pleasingly adequate ones. I'm sorry Sinatra had a seemingly violent parting of the ways with him months before shooting commenced but Lawford's loss was most certainly our gain when it came to "Robin and the Seven Hoods".

Yes, as Lawford himself acknowledged in "That's Entertainment" (part one), he was never going to pose a threat to any of the professional singers then on the MGM lot. Bing's (radio?) recording of "A Fella With An Umbrella" is both charming and of course naturally, perfectly in tune.

Fred Allen's gentle, sophisticated and cerebral style was indeed similar to the slightly more expansive Benny's. I thought television was far kinder to Jack Benny, though. Did Allen radio "guest" often with Bing?

Yes, Bing and Fred Allen did appear on radio together many, many times over the years. Here are two examples:

And I do agree that Fred Allen was much better suited to the medium of radio than to that of television, though he often did a great job as panelist on the famous game show What's My Line?, hosted by one of the most soft-spoken American TV hosts of all time, Mr. John Charles Daly.
