Thanks for those responses. Yes, I did buy the complete set, and am awaiting delivery.  Hoping it comes on time... the mail has been really bad.

I just had the opportunity to buy the complete 15 album set of "Bing in Hollywood" or "Bing's Hollywood" from a long time collector.  What can anyone tell me about these albums? Sound quality? Rarity?  Any stories regarding your own purchase?  I have a beautiful Magnavox console that was restored two years ago, and I look forward to spinning these on this beautiful console.

Swaps and Sales » Bing Autographs » 27/12/2020 3:40 pm

I have a quick question. I perused Bing Crosby autographs on eBay a few minutes ago.  I noticed that often his autograph is simply "Bing".  Do autographs with his full name have more value?  And is that because more often than not he just signed his first name? Curious... I wouldn't mind owning an autograph.

I concur platnip!  It seems that I always see the same Jonzo CDs on eBay.

It has been a while on this message board, but all is well, and I continue to enjoy as much Bing Crosby as I can.  Any current leads on available Jonzo music sets?  Thanks.  I perused eBay, but did not find much that I do not already have.

Wow- great story.  Love when you read about a fellow fan's generosity.  Perhaps I will get lucky with some of those Jonzo CDs... maybe even a free one now and then!

Great question Peter.  I'm interested to hear from the experts on this one as well.  I know there is a ton of radio stuff, especially from the Philco show.  Many songs were performed on radio that he never recorded in the studio.  Im sure that is still an untapped goldmine!

Halfway through Volume 1, and Volume 2 was delivered Friday.  Amazing read... I just wish I had a CD recording for every single that Giddins has broken down for the reader.  I feel like Im missing out every time he analyzes a song.

I love saying to young people when Bing's "White Christmas" is playing, "Did you know this guy was a bigger star in the 20th century than anyone comparable today?".  They look at me, ask me what I mean, and I tell them.  It all starts with "White Christmas" though.

Is the discography still available?  If it is, I could send a check for this to Wig Wiggins along with the money for my membership in the ICC.  Sounds like something I should grab now while I can.

When you start collecting one particular thing, it's pretty exciting.   So much to get, so much to find, so much to enjoy.   You almost don't know where to start, and with Bing there's an awful lot of stuff, audio records, radio shows and video TV shows and movies.   Good luck to you, in some ways I envy you're beginning.   But you're lucky you're starting now, it's a heck of a lot easier to find odd recordings and albums today and movies today than it was in the 1970's and 1980's.   The only way I could get old Bing albums was to scour Used Record album stores and all you could do was hope you'd find something you've never seen.   But, don't get me wrong it was FUN and then that moment you find an album you've been looking for after thumbing thru 100's of albums and then BING, there  it is, an album you don't have.  YESHHH!   Oh, it was doubly exciting to find something that you could only find if you were lucky.   Today, you go on the internet and you can find just about anything you want with a simple search.   No internet then to spoil you, you had to really SEARCH, not just type in a word and watch it all appear.

EXAMPLE:  Several years ago (2010) I was on my knees in a dusty old bookstore in Hollywood, CA (which also had some records) flipping thru what they had in boxes. Lo and behold! I found a sealed monaural copy of  "El Senor BING" that had a price sticker of $3.00! More amazing was the fact that the price tag had a date on it of "10-00" typed at the bottom right. I asked the clerk what that meant and he told me that it was the month/year the record was placed on the floor for sale!!!  So not only was the price a miracle, but here was a sealed copy some 50 years old which came from God knows where and laid on that store's floor for 10 years before anyone cared to buy it!!!!

What a great story.  I assume that the disc itself was still in wonderful condition with no warps.  I kn

Biography » Whiteman Contract Signing- 1926 » 05/1/2019 3:23 pm

In Chapter 9 of Giddins biography, Pocketful of Dreams, page 145, the author recounts Bing and Al Rinker being signed to Paul Whiteman's band.   He writes, "The next day they returned to Whiteman's dressing room with Al's dad to sign the papers."  This statement confuses me, as Al's dad seems to be mentioned several times as an absentee father by this time.  Sister Mildred doesn't even seem to know about her father's later marriage when the boys first arrived in Los Angles.  Any idea where the father was during that time, and how he magically materialized to be there when they signed the Whiteman contract?

Perhaps I missed something in reading, but the mention of Al's father surprised me.  Any insights from anyone here?  Reading the first volume, and I admit I may skim a bit here and there.  Amazing how quickly the lucky boys climbed the ladder to success.  As Giddins writes, it seems it was the perfect collision of many factors happening all at the right time.

My thought with this CD set, is that that lots of CDs will appear, and those lots will have volumes I already have along with volumes I do not have.  As a result, I will wind up duplicating volumes to get new volumes I need to a acquire a complete set one day.  Yes, I am familiar with the world of collecting.  I collect juvenile series books (Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, and tons of other similar series), and I have had to buy duplicates at times to get a volume that I want!

So in the last three days I have been able to acquire over 20 of the Chronological CDs.  Good start for sure.  Now, how many times am I going to have to duplicate volumes to get volumes I don't have?

Well- I have 10 volumes heading this way, and I will also be picking up some more that are still on sale on eBay.  Waiting to hear from Malcolm if the ones he mentioned for sale are still available and how much.  Time to dig deep into this treasure trove.  Undoubtedly both of you already have these!

Thank you Richard for the response.  Time and tide wait for no man.  Which is why we should strike while the iron is hot.  Had I followed through five years ago as planned, I may have been able to have the complete set now, as well as five years of Crosby appreciation and knowledge.

I discovered some still for sale there in the UK on eBay.  I am awaiting a response about postage, and how to handle the sale.  But what a shame that they still are not available as complete sets.
