Books » What Are Your Favorite Bing Crosby Books » 21/3/2025 4:54 am |
My favourite is Gary Giddins' second volume because its coverage of Bing's wartime life was revealing and fascinating. He acknowledged the access he had to material which was unavailable when he wrote his first Bing book. What a difference that made
Recording » Bing's Irish Records » 21/3/2025 4:39 am |
Bing's Irish recordings received plenty of airplay this weekend in Australia. At least two radio stations I know of featured Irish songs. A Sydney community broadcaster surprised me by including an instrumental version of 'Londonderry Air'. It was by Larry Adler. I wonder if big had any professional connection with him..

David, I don't remember the first Crosby song I heard on the radio (we called it the wireless) but it may have been one of them. In the 1940s Aussies couldn't avoid hearing Bing on the radio. I lived in Melbourne (Australia's second-largest city) and in 1947 there were almost seven hours of programs each week which played only Crosby records.

I saw some Crosby memorabilia last week on a British TV program titled The Antiques Road Show, which would have originated a few years ago. A participant had brought along a letter from Bing (from the 1940s I think) but I don't recall the subject. I was surprised that it was included in the program but items related to popular music are often included.
General Discussion » What non-Bing music have you been listening to recently? » 04/3/2025 3:25 am |
Years ago Helen gave me the package of Ella Fitzgerald's Verve Song Books so last night I listened to one of the Rodgers and Hart discs. Marvellous songs and singing and accompaniment by Buddy Bregman's orchestra, I've always been intrigued by the reference to My Fair Lady in the 'Manhattan' lyric so I decided to discover what the original reference was. Apparently it was 'Abie's Irish Rose', which Gary Giddins' second volume informs us that it was a 1920's Broadway phenomenon and a disastrous Crosby movie production.

That was an entertaining program, David. 'I'm Making Believe' was a popular song in Australia but not until 1946 with the record by Ella Fitzgerald and The Ink Spots. At the commencement of the program, did I hear Ken Carpenter mispronounce Bing's first song as 'Adeste Fidelis'? Surely not.

David, by coincidence I'm listening to my Jonzo CDs in chronological order (again) and that's the disc that I'm about to hear again. It's a great way for me to spend an hour or two on a quiet afternoon.

Others of Note » Phil Crosby - Little By Little » 15/12/2024 1:05 am |
When Phillip came to Australia in 1965, the Sydney newspaper The Sun-Herald gave special attention to his visit. The Chevron Hotel's advertisement introduced him a 'one of the Crosby boys' and printed an article headlined 'Being Bing's son only opens the door', describing his career and interest in football. Gary had performed here in 1956 on the same bill as Louis Armstrong. The promoter's right-hand-man later wrote a book on the local music business and alleged that Gary demanded top billing because Louis was a coloured performer. That request was refused. He described Gary's performance as 'pleasant and adequate'.
Others of Note » Russ Columbo - Where The Blue Of The Night » 15/12/2024 12:19 am |
Bing's 1931 version of 'Where the Blue of the Night' was not released in Australia (as a single) because Brunswick (Australia) had gone out of business that year, a victim of the Depression. In 1933 one radio station in Melbourne, the nation's second-largest city, had a copy of Russ Columbo's record and played it in its evening program on 24 September.

Australians were able to watch The Bing Crosby Show from October 1964. It had been publicised for months beforehand, one article headlined 'BING CROSBY HAS ANOTHER WIFE'. After the second episode was shown, one newspaper critic wrote described it as a good, safe vehicle, pleasant and innocuous. That series was scheduled for Friday evenings until April 1965 and repeated on weekday afternoons the following year.

Welcome TACOMA from a Crosby fan in Bathurst, Australia. I suppose you have some connection with Tacoma which I was pleased to visit in 1983 to attend a Crosby Tribute by the then Bing Crosby Historical Society. Great memories.

Greetings Pantelis from Bathurst, a rural city in Australia where I try to keep folk aware of the great music Bing made by including some of his records in a music program I present each week on our local community radio station. Bing has given me a great deal of pleasure over many decades

This is a belated 'hullo' from Australia, Michael. I'm a very old bloke whose early years were pre-television and I was in my late teens when I discovered the early Crosby recordings and I was hooked. Each week I present a two-hour music program on our local community station and always include at least a couple of Crosby records. As for Chicago, I have good memories of 'the windy city' when I studied at the University of Chicago and managed to survive the winter.
Others of Note » Dame Vera Lynn Has Died » 02/9/2024 8:00 am |
In 1941, 1942 and 1944 Vera Lynn had more hit records than Bing in Australia. Her record of 'Auf Wiedersehn Sweetheart' sold more than one hundred thousand thousand copies, which was a monumental figure, not achieved by any of Bing's singles. She performed here in 1963 (but I didn't see her).

In Australia, Bing's Decca record of 'Abraham' was pressed with his 'Easter Parade'. The record sold well but musicologist David Kent included neither in his Australian Chart Book.

Yes, David, it's a beaut disc.

Yes, but why did that photo include only three?
Others of Note » The Four Aces - Pennies From Heaven » 28/7/2024 6:51 am |
Yes David, The Four Aces were in fine form when they made that recording and the fact that it's a very good song also also helps.
Others of Note » The Mills Brothers - I Found A Million Dollar Baby » 13/7/2024 8:04 am |
The Mills Brothers was one of the best male pop vocal groups, in my opinion, and I frequently play one of their records in my weekly radio program. By 1938 the group must have been only three. it's a beaut version of that old song.
Recording » Pinetop's Boogie Woogie » 13/7/2024 7:53 am |
Australians were spared the opportunity to buy Bing's record of 'Pinetop's Boogie Woogie' as it wasn't released here as a single.
Recording » Whatever happened to "Bing Sings The Hits" » 13/7/2024 7:33 am |
An interesting example of copyright affecting the release of a Crosby record in Australia occurred in 1957when Festival released 'Gigi' and 'Trust Your Destiny to a Star'. It was soon replaced by 'Gigi' with 'Chicago'. 'Trust Your Destiny to a Star' was written by Cole Porter for a television show titled Aladdin. It had not yet been shown in Australia (nor in the USA, until February 1958) and the publisher which owned the copyright must have demanded its withdrawal

I like to hear other versions of songs associated with Bing. I don't think I've heard of Joey Nash before but he was OK.
