Russ Columbo - Where The Blue Of The Night

No one could sing Bing's theme song like Bing, but Russ Columbo had a go of it on a Victor record from November 18, 1931...

Re: Russ Columbo - Where The Blue Of The Night

Russ Columbo had a fine voice but I agree with you, it is impossible to record a competitive version of Bing's theme song, Where the blue of the night is a wonderful song that Bing recorded multiple time in his long career, my favorite one is the 1945 version for Decca but the 1931 version for Brunswick was also great. 1931 was a pivotal year for both. Russ Columbo recorded his most remembered song Prisoner of Love and Bing Crosby started his 31-season regular radio show, break in movies with Sennet and recorded hits like his theme song, Just One More Chance, I Found A Million Dollar Baby, Out of Nowhere, At Your Command etc. Thanks for posting

Re: Russ Columbo - Where The Blue Of The Night

Bing's 1931 version of 'Where the Blue of the Night' was not released in Australia (as a single) because Brunswick (Australia) had gone out of business that year, a victim of the Depression. In 1933 one radio station in Melbourne, the nation's second-largest city, had a copy of Russ Columbo's record and played it in its evening program on 24 September.
