Oh! I've been so caught up in a crazy Major League Baseball playoff weekend that I missed the exact date but I knew it was coming soon. Indeed, 45 years and I vividly remember ( as most who were alive on that date) how I found out about it and by whom, etc.

I will remember and pay homage by playing "Seasons" & "The Final Chapter" this evening.

Hi Ian and thanks for the warm wishes and "welcome". I am enjoying tonight's cocktail hour by pairing a Basie album on Daybreak recorded a few months before the "Meeting of the Titans" titled "Have a Nice Day" and then on to our Golden Anniversary celebrated album. (It should be well noted that during this period in 1971-1973 Sonny Burke had taken over as A&R director for Daybreak since his guy named Sinatra was in a retirement period. It was his idea to get Bing and the Count together on record!) Too Bad that the vocal  and the band did not see the light of day together. Oh well...

Loved your record store tale and have one favorite of my own which just happens to be connected to our boy which I know I have told in a thread before here. About 15 years ago I was visiting a Hollywood book store that also sold records. I was down on my knees going thru boxes of albums on the floor when I found what was (for me) a treasure. A sealed mono copy of "El Sen'or Bing!" that had been sitting there for over 10 years! (I knew the length of time because they had the date of arrival in the store stamped on the pricing label).  It cost me $10.00! It is one of my most cherished of my Bing collection because of it's circumstance.

I hope some other members check in within the next few days to be able to celebrate the anniversary.

I  send you and all here my very best wishes as the world begins to once again come alive!

We celebrate the 50th anniversary of Bing recording his vocal tracks for this album today, tomorrow and the 16th of March. Time to pull out the album and give it a spin or two, eh?

Bless you, Richard for your decades of unending love of all things Bing. You kept this site afloat during some very "dark" years and it was the place to come to to share and enjoy the "rebirth" while it lasted. As all of us here, I look forward to seeing what the results are from the recent announcement. I wish you all the best as you look to the future.

P.S. You could not have left the Admin position in the hands of a more dedicated Crosby person. I know David will continue to grow your legacy here on the board!

Hi Ron,
Indeed ,what I meant and what I typed were two different things and thanks for catching that. But of course you "caught my drift"! I always try to be punctual, so indeed I shall make sure I do just as you have suggested.

All the best for a festive Holiday Season!

Just stopping by to wish all here a Happy & Healthy Holiday season. Just like the rest of you I can't wait to pop the cork at 12:00 midnight January 1, 2021 and hit the "reset" button. Just as Ron said, I had very high hopes for what I was regaling in as "The New Roaring 20's". Well, we have 9 more years to see how that pans out! Nonetheless, we carry on hoping that indeed "next year all our troubles will be out of sight"!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all!

I applaud all of your efforts. May I also direct all of us to this very active and valuable person who just happens to be the daughter of Al Martino. She has a GREAT Instagram account known as "Vintage Los Angeles" and has fought for the preservation of "Old Hollywood and Los Angeles".

The very, very sad fact of the matter is that (at least prior to the Pandemic) very rich individuals with absolutely ZERO knowledge or care about the history of the Sunset Strip, Sunset Plaza, etc. have been literally "sucking up" any and all available properties along it. They wish to do nothing but destroy what exists and put up hotels & condos all with "retail space" at ground level. The Pandemic may very well have been the Crosby Building's best friend.  With the exception of an enormous project East of the location that was well underway prior to the economic shutdown, everything has come to a halt.  Perhaps the "new world" where people will be working from home and less in need of office space and more conglomerate hotels will save it. Time will tell.

These should never be used for comparisons to the originals. These are purely done for sound update/refreshments.

I have not been a fan of these "re-recordings" overall. Maybe the one done with Ella is still OK to my ears. However, anything to keep Bing "alive"...even if it's only another Christmas release...is surely welcomed. I am surprised at the rather inexpensive price of the CD despite the rather large undertaking this production was. Alos, that (in these days of "vinyl revival") there is not an LP issue offered.

The "White Christmas" track sounds rather good.

That is well-deserved news! Any way to find how the book is selling? That will certainly determine the fate of Volume 3.

Nothing REALLY new here per se as we all figured what was destroyed in that horrible fire. But there is some confirmation. I can still smell that sickening, acrid pitch black smoke that overtook Hollywood that morning.

Dug out my copy of the 5 LP "Bing" biography for the birthday weekend. Playing sides 6-10 this afternoon. I'm surprised that it is mostly in VG+ to NM- shape.

When you start collecting one particular thing, it's pretty exciting.   So much to get, so much to find, so much to enjoy.   You almost don't know where to start, and with Bing there's an awful lot of stuff, audio records, radio shows and video TV shows and movies.   Good luck to you, in some ways I envy you're beginning.   But you're lucky you're starting now, it's a heck of a lot easier to find odd recordings and albums today and movies today than it was in the 1970's and 1980's.   The only way I could get old Bing albums was to scour Used Record album stores and all you could do was hope you'd find something you've never seen.   But, don't get me wrong it was FUN and then that moment you find an album you've been looking for after thumbing thru 100's of albums and then BING, there  it is, an album you don't have.  YESHHH!   Oh, it was doubly exciting to find something that you could only find if you were lucky.   Today, you go on the internet and you can find just about anything you want with a simple search.   No internet then to spoil you, you had to really SEARCH, not just type in a word and watch it all appear.

EXAMPLE:  Several years ago (2010) I was on my knees in a dusty old bookstore in Hollywood, CA (which also had some records) flipping thru what they had in boxes. Lo and behold! I found a sealed monaural copy of  "El Senor BING" that had a price sticker of $3.00! More amazing was the fact that the price tag had a date on it of "10-00" typed at the bottom right. I asked the clerk what that meant and he told me that it was the month/year the record was placed on the floor for sale!!!  So not only was the price a miracle, but here was a sealed copy some 50 years old which came from God knows where and laid on that store's floor for 10 years before anyone cared to buy it!!!!
