I wouldn't say it was the best song ever written, but it is certainly one of the best songs ever written. It certainly worked better once the earlier verse was cut (I may be wrong, but I once heard that Bing told Berlin to drop the verse as it was too geographically specific).
The fact that it is still released every Christmas and that everyone knows it certainly marks it as a major contribution to musical history.

It is certainly among the best secular Christmas songs; however, "I'll Be Home for Christmas" still gives it some competition in that category.

I really like "The Secret of Christmas", which includes '....it's not the things you do at Christmas time, but the Christmas things you do all year through...'.
I usually use those words in my annual Christmas message but didn't this last Christmas because of circumstances.
