I wouldn't say it was the best song ever written, but it is certainly one of the best songs ever written. It certainly worked better once the earlier verse was cut (I may be wrong, but I once heard that Bing told Berlin to drop the verse as it was too geographically specific).

The fact that it is still released every Christmas and that everyone knows it certainly marks it as a major contribution to musical history.

I really like "The Secret of Christmas", which includes '....it's not the things you do at Christmas time, but the Christmas things you do all year through...'.
I usually use those words in my annual Christmas message but didn't this last Christmas because of circumstances.

In my opinion the 3 best Christmas records are "White Christmas by Bing, "I'll Be Home For Christmas by Bing and "Mary's Boy Child by Harry Belafonte.

In my opinion it’s impossible to agree on a world ranking with subjective criteria’s. But the timing of the song during the Second World War, Bing’s immense status during that period and the success of the Holiday Inn in Box Office in 1942 and of White Christmas in 1954. Insure the longevity of the song making it a Christmas classic and part of our civilization and of course the best selling single of all times. The song simply melody and the nostalgic lyrics contains the essence of Christmas and it brings back childhood memorys in almost all the people in the western hemisphere.

When the best song ever it’s concerned everybody will have his own favorite. There is not a song with universal acclaim as the best. The world ranking is bases on the quantity of sales not the quality (though sometimes the immense quantity such as the 50 million copies of White Christmas usually means that the quality of the song is universal appreciated). At the end everybody would have to choose his own favorite song
