Artistic Legacy » Mardi Gras parade » 17/7/2019 7:48 pm |
There is an interesting link in the summer 2019 issue of the BING Magazine: At the Mardi Gras parade there had been a carriage with a display of Birth Of The Blues and a larger-than-life puppet of Bing on top of it. As the internet address is slightly wrong in the magazine (one space has to be replaced by a slash) here is the correct link: www.facebook.com/watch/?v=295226567818244
(It's quite funny to listen to the commentators of the parade, one obviously not knowing who Bing Crosby is ...)
Radio » Anne Hopper » 07/5/2017 6:30 pm |
I was sad to learn that Anne Hopper of Radio Cumbria, who played a lot of Bing for many years in her regular weekend shows with music of the 40s and 50s, presented her last programme on 15 April. You can still listen to it for the next few days using the following link:
Fortunately John Lipscombe who already filled in for Anne Hopper from time to time in the past carries on with the show.

If you want to celebrate Ella Fitzgerald's 100th birthday you can do so by watching this nice medley she is doing together with Bing:
On the internet page "10 fascinating facts about Ella Fitzgerald" you find the information that at young age she was a fan of Louis Amstrong and Bing Crosby:

I couldn't agree more, Frans - I'm sure Bing would have done some really fascinating things if he would have lived longer: Not only some more concerts in Europe, but also the planned "Road To the Fountain Of Youth"-movie and maybe even some CD albums in superb digital quality. And what a shame that your compatriot Rudi Carrell did not have the pleasure of welcoming Bing in his show!
Personal Life » Bing in Germany » 06/4/2017 8:10 pm |
In the seventies Bing obviously planned to give concerts in Germany. As the reputable German news magazin "Der Spiegel" reports in its issue from September 20th 1976 Bing wanted to appear on stage in Frankfurt, Berlin and Hamburg and thereby thank the Germans for calling him lovingly "Der Bingle". According to "Der Spiegel" he intended to donate the sales revenues of his concerts to German charities. For those who speak German here is the link to the article in the Spiegel news archive:
Bing's death in 1977 presumably was the reason why the concerts never were realised. As a matter of fact I watched a German TV show ("Am laufenden Band") on October 15th 1977 when the host (Rudi Carrell) announced that it had been planned that Bing Crosby should sing White Christmas in his show but that he unfortunataly had died the day before.... Could it be that the German concerts had been planned for October 1977 for the days following the TV show?
BTW watching this TV show as a 13 year old boy was the starting point for me for becoming a Bing Crosby fan. Hearing from the host that "The Old Groaner" had been the most successful singer on earth I curiously watched all the films and shows which were transmitted during the following days in commemoration of Bing - and as you can imagine I got hooked immediately!

Thank you very much Richard for clarifying my inaccuracies and for emphasising Malcolm's outstanding contribution!

Two days ago I received my copy of Sepia's newest release "Join Bing & Sing Along 101 Gang Songs / On The Happy Side". And though these may not be Bing's most outsanding recordings I couldn't be happier with the 2 CDs which became my constant companions for the last 48 hours. On the one hand I connect happy memories with the "Sing Along" LPs which I listened to a lot while learning during my last 2 school years in the early eighties. On the other hand the bouncy and rhythmic recordings with Bing's wonderful voice simply generate good mood. And on top of it there are 3 nice bonus tracks: "The Music of Home", It's A Good Day" and "Aloha Meens I Love You". Obviously Malcolm Macfarlane was also involved in the process of compiling the CDs as he gets a friendly mention in the attached booklet. And Malcolm just posted on facebook that ICC members should wait for the spring issue of BING to get a discount offer for members. Best wishes from Salzburg / Austria, Thomas

And I just discovered a collection of 5 "Early Bing" albums on amazon which obviously include some nice alternate takes:

I think Arne Fogel broadcasted in one of his last issues of his "Bing Shift" a version of Domenica which Bing had recorded for a radio programme.

Dear fellow Bing aficionados,
I'd like to introduce myself, too as I'm new in this forum, Thank you, Richard, for the very warm welcome you gave me a few days ago!
I'm a Bing enthusiast since October 15th 1977 when as a 13 year old boy I was watching a German TV show and the host told the audience that Bing Crosby was invited for this very evening to sing White Christmas but that he very sadly had died the day before. As he also said that Bing had had sold more records than anyone else I was interested how this successful singer would sound like and I watched all the films and Christmas shows that were broadcasted during the following weeks. And what shall I say - I got hooked immediately! In the early 90s after hearing of the existence of the ICC I became a member in this wonderful fan club.
This year I visited for the first time the Leeds meeting where I must have met you, John Fahy, too, but unfortunately I can't connect your name to any face.... But it's nice to meet you here again :-)
I'm looking forward to interesting discussions and exchanges on this forum!
Best wishes
Thomas
