After a long dry spell--and with an assist from Malcolm Macfarlane--I've discovered over a half-dozen "new" vintage magazines that featured Bing on the cover during his lifetime. Countries of publication for these recent finds range from the US, UK, France, and Brazil, and they've been duly added to the list, with a couple of photos also added.

Just added cover images of two LPs that some feel represent the nadir of Bing's long and varied recording career: Thoroughly Modern Bing (1968) and Hey Jude/Hey Bing (1969), the latter featuring the relentlessly (and, IMHO, unfairly) maligned recording of the title song. There's also a composite image of all 15 of the historic Bing's Hollywood series of LPs from 1962.

Merry Christmas, Bing folk. It's been awhile since my last update, but I have finally gotten around to scanning a couple more interesting items* from my collection and adding them to my Bing "Memorabilia, Advertising, and Promotional Items" blog page: (1) a special Road to Zanzibar script that was used as a guide for writing subtitles for overseas release, and (2) a September 2, 1944 copy of Melody Maker, which covered Bing's visit to England to entertain troops during the Second World War. Seek and find original movie stills from Road to Morocco and Going My Way (the latter signed by Rise Stevens), a publicity shot of Bing tipping some porters after a train trip, and a rare pic of a bearded Bing (the real deal, not the bogus bristles of Anything Goes) after an extended Elko excursion. I was surprised to see that Bing had made it onto this, um, eclectic (let's just call it odd) list of "The 25 Greatest Christmas Albums of All Time," compiled by Rolling Stone magazine back in 2012.

To the author's credit, here is a telling quote taken from the blurb about Bing's White Christmas (formerly Merry Christmas) album: 

"This is what great singing is. If you don't like it, you're looking for something else." 

At least they got that right.

After a longish hiatus, I’ve finally gotten around to scanning a few more Bing items from my collection, which have been duly posted to my blog. Recently added to the Records page you’ll find the cover of the 10” LP Auld Lang Syne from 1949, the 45 picture sleeve and record of “Nothing in Common,” a few public service radio recordings, and Bing’s San Francisco Experience LP from 1970. New to the Memorabilia page are more than a half-dozen movie stills and publicity photos (one a stunning signed portrait from the early 1930s), including representatives from Billboard Girl, The Big Broadcast, Rhythm on the Range, Double or Nothing, and Rhythm on the River. Thank you for posting this fascinating overview of John Newton's collection, Richard. He, Jack Souther, and precious few others are, as you say, to be treasured by all of us. Acquiring rarities of any kind was a much more daunting undertaking even twenty years ago than it is today. Thanks to those in the pre-internet era with the fortitude to seek out scarce, historically significant recordings before they were relegated to oblivion (or worse, destroyed), and preserving them for posterity, we now all benefit. We are, as Mr. Newton's namesake famously said, standing on the shoulders of giants.
