This is of course, great news, but I assume the "no CD" option also means that there will be no lossless download - which is bad news.

I listened to this one quite recently and have to confess that I also wasn't too fond of it. You'd think the combination Latin+Billy May+Bing would work out, but unfortunately, it didn't (at least for me). I would have preferred if Bing would have concentrated on just a few Latin standards (like Mel Tormé did with Billy May) instead of doing this album of medleys. Somehow, it doesn't sound right. The degraded sound quality of the CD - most likely mastered from vinyl due to missing master tapes - makes the album barely listenable to me. The mono version is a bit better, still no winner...
Recording » Well, Bust my buttons.... UMe is releasing "new" stuff on CD!!!! » 23/10/2017 9:30 pm |
I think CC and UMe have filled many gaps in our collections - and this pair of releases seems to be another winner.
An official tape-mastered "Autobiography" set would have been nice, but I wonder if UMe even has tapes for this album. If they ever get around to do "Holiday In Europe", they will hopefully fill it up with all the extant alternates - and not with previously available Buddy Cole tracks. This makes the yet-to-be-re-issued list of studio material pretty short - with "Bingo Viejo", "Hey Jude, Hey Bing" and the Longines recordings remaining.
New and Re-issued materials » "Going Hollywood" CD sets, Volumes 1-4 - Opinions? » 23/10/2017 9:24 pm |
Just a short question about the sets issued by Jasmine Records: according to the Bing Crosby online discography, Paramount issued several promotional disks containing actual soundtrack recordings from Bing's movies. Were these disks used for the Jasmine releases? If not, would this be a viable project for Sepia?

So, are they still available from them?

Over the years I've been collecting most of Bing's commercial recordings re-issued on CD (I have yet to catch up with some of the more recent Sepia stuff and some of the alternate UA takes), but I've never come across the Harry Lillis and Bar-One CDs. Some of the rare material on these CDs has since been made officially by the Crosby estate through their partnership with CC (and later UMG). Unfortunately, there are still entire albums that are exclusive to these CDs. How are/were they distributed? How can I find them?
Many thanks in advance
