Re: Favorite Decade Of Bing's Recording Career

Yes, I'll have a good old search on YouTube.
It's an excellent source for sampling and listening.
On CD, I do have an augmented soundtrack of  Mr Young's "Around the World in Eighty Days" and it is sumptuous. All I need, now is to actually watch the Oscar winning film for the first time. Without Bing being one of the few Hollywood guest stars who didn't participate, all I can do is offer the tenuous connection that its director Michael Anderson also directed Gary Cooper, who handed Bing his Oscar, in his final film, "The Naked Edge"
I know, I'm now sounding desperate.

There is a much much closer one but lesser known, Any guesses?
Clue: It has to do with the original casting.

Re: Favorite Decade Of Bing's Recording Career

Ooooooooh, now I am panicked into pressure.
The Athens air is making you most mischievous.
Don't tell me. Bing was originally going to play Cooper's part?
Kathryn was originally going to play Deborah Kerr's?
Harry Crosby was originally cast to play Diane Cilento's little boy?
Bob Hope had an inappropriate, edit removed cameo as the killer closes in?
Can I sound any more desperate?
Please relieve me of my misery.

Re: Favorite Decade Of Bing's Recording Career

Nice thinking but wrong movie, the conection is with the first one, Around the world in 80 days, Michael Todd originaly asked Kathryn to star in the picture as Princess Auda but Hary Cohn had a personal fight with Todd and he denied him access to his contracted star Kathryn Grant. So Todd started to look somewhere else and selected Shirley MacLaine for the role of Princes Auda (still alive at 91).
So Kathryn Crosby was the first choice for the role. Cohn liked Kathryn and Todd wanted her for the part a lot but their fight got in the way and MacLaine took the part from Kathryn's hands. Wouldn't she have been a lovely Princes Auda?
I am sorry for causing you agony over this.
When Hary Cohn proposed to Kathryn the role of Princes Parisa in 7th Voayage he alreadey owed her an oriental princes role.

Re: Favorite Decade Of Bing's Recording Career

Ah! Well that's all a relief. Agony over.
Trust me to plump for the wrong film in the first place.
Undoubtedly Kathryn would have made a beautiful Princess Auda but I'm relieved she didn't have to risk the skirt chasing, clammy clutches of the notorious Cohn, who undoubtedly liked her.

I just need now to think how I can work this back to Bing's recorded output in the 1950's before there's trouble....

Re: Favorite Decade Of Bing's Recording Career

Got it!
What would be the general view if Bing had sung the film's opening theme?

Does that work?

Re: Favorite Decade Of Bing's Recording Career

Oh yeas that is also a nice connection, Bing did a great version of Around the world. It sure works fine.

Re: Favorite Decade Of Bing's Recording Career

Phew!
I've just sought out my extended CD of the " .. 80 Days" soundtrack ... and it's still sealed!!!
Clearly I've only previously listened to my original 1950's vinyl copy.
My mind does play tricks with these differing formats!
