Parts of the Kathryn and Bing Crosby Private Collection will be auctioned after a global tour that includes London.
“One of the things that I, along with my sister and brother, wanted to do is to extend the legacy of our parents. That’s why we’re working with Sotheby’s—to preserve and share the memories of both our mother and father. They weren’t just our parents; they touched the world in their own remarkable ways, and through this collection, we can share what inspired and moved them.”
Harry Crosby announced through the Sotheby’s official website.
The items of the collection include the famous painting On the Moor of Sir Alfred James Munnings, it was the pride of the art collection that Bing had created and it is considered to worth a fortune as other paintings of the same painter have been sold for many millions. Another painting by Charles Marion Russel is also a very valuable art work.
Kathryn had a personal collection of original Faberge jewels including a Saphire Mouse that is priceless. Many other objects including a beautiful portrait of Kathryn, the piano from High Society, at least two gowns of Kathryn Crosby, a Bing Crosby helmet from a Road picture are mentioned in the announcement.
Kathryn owned a large collection of antiques most of them bought by her, in the duration of her marriage and some of them like most of the paintings and some film memorabilia were purchased previously by Bing. Some of her most famous clothes that were creations of her personal designer Jean Louis will be included in the auction like one of the iconic dresses she wore on the Christmas shows.
Those were all private property of Kathryn Crosby outside of any Bing Crosby trust.
According to Bing’s will “… all of his automobiles, jewelry, silverware, books, paintings, works of art, household furniture and furnishings, clothing and other personal effects to his wife Kathryn” Malcolm MacFarlane Day By Day June 27 1977.
I am guessing that most of them were in the recently sold Katryn’s Jacklin Drive Estate in Hillsborough. Kathryn also made available many objects to Bing’s funs in the early 80s through a private auction and her children following her steps sharing the legacy of their parents with the world. While Bing’s name is second on the announcement (Kathryn and Bing) it is true that most of the objects are stronger related to Kathryn than to Bing such as her dresses. This is seems to be a smaller auction of few items with higher value, all the listed items seem to have a very large financial value irrelevant with the status of their previous owners and the Crosby factors adds certainly more.
The objects will be a part of an exhibition called Swinging on a Star, The Private Collection of Kathryn and Bing Crosby. That will go to a global tour giving the chance to many Crosby enthusiasts or art collectors to enjoy the historic objects before the auction in December.
The exhibition will be held at

Town and Country wrote an article covering the collection. "He won and Oscar. She collected Faberge"
The first estimates is that Kathryn owned objects that were worth at least 7 Million apiece meaning the entire price of the collection can reach dozens of millions (A Munnings painting have been sold for 7M alone) and perhaps much more. Kathryn is appearing to have invested large amounts of her personal wealth obtaining a series of objects throughout her life.
The fact that she owned privately one of the rarest collections of Faberge worldwide and she had at her disposal a collection of this side without selling it (all objects were left directly to her not to a trust) speaks of her fine taste and her true dedication to the arts. She mentioned in her books of her love for the antiques but the length and actual rarity and value of her belongings were underreported until now that some of the finest objects of this collection will be shown for the first time before the scheduled auction.
Harry is quoted by Town and Country saying “Mom was drawn to Fabergé early in the marriage and met the experts, the Schaeffer family of A la vielle Russie, and later, Wartski….and she collected carefully and gained a deep interest and understanding of Fabergé.”
Helen Culver Smith, Sotheby's Head of Decorative Arts Worldwide and Head of Faberge and Russian Works of Art one of the top Faberge specialists on earth commented that
“this collection reveals how dedicated Kathryn was to the field of Fabergé and to the way in which Bing supported her focused and determined approach. In addition to forming an important part of the family’s private residence, some of the Fabergé items were also worn by Kathryn which is a very unique approach to objects of vertu, speaking to her singular, bold, and creative style.”

Good grief, Pantelis.
This is all incredible - both the collection and all your information.
I think when it comes to matters Kathryn - you must be the world expert!
I had no idea how Kathryn collected. This is all mightily impressive.
I must confess, I've already had a look at parts of the collection featured on the Sotheby's website and would love to place a bid on Bing's "Road to Zanzibar" pith helmet. It looks in wonderful condition.
Would I get away with wearing it while doing my weekly shopping?
Both Bing and Kathryn demonstrated some high taste, here.
I do wonder how much during Kathryn's lifetime she had displayed her collection in her homes or had them in storage?
Whether for example the Fabergé pieces were mostly purchased for the home or as investments?

I believe that I have the answers here. Kathryn collected as hobby never as an investment. It is my understanding that all the objects were displayed at her Jacklin Drive 1200 Estate durign her life, I guess that the house used in the White Christmas DVD edition interview of Kathryn's is her Genoa residence and the style does not indicate a similar classic decor with the Hillsborough residence, but she might have stored some objects close to her there too. The Faberge doubled as decorative objects and at the same time as jewels, as she wear them regularly.
Kathryn was known in the San Francisco high society circles for her rare jewels and some friends invited her in 2010 to wear the Cullinan Blue Diamond necklace before the donation of the priceless piece to the Smithsonian Institute, the blue diamond was found little after the white Cullinan that part of it is in the British Crown. The owner of the blue diamond asked Kathryn to wear it in the private party before the donation as she was known to have the style to support rare jewels.
Kathryn started collecting early in the marriage becoming an antique and Faberge expert and Bing's art collection was even older. They both had a fine classic taste.

It's nice to know that these items were enjoyed and not just stored away.
It's must be a testament to Bing's fond feelings over his film "High Society" (which I believe to have been his favourite) to have purchased that beautiful piano and its stool listed on your linked press release, Pantelis.
Having just checked how visible it is as a whole during the "Now You Has Jazz" number, it's incredible to think that should anyone have a spare twenty to thirty thousand dollars - and indeed the houseroom for it ... it could be theirs!
Is anyone on here tempted?
