For those who are interested in the Bing "Redmond Nostalgia" CDs, those are currently available on eBay (just type in "Bing Crosby Redmond Nostalgia" and you should find them easily). Some of the auctions end today (7/30/2019), and the rest in the next couple of days. I also have all 5 of the "Harry Lillis" series up on eBay as well.

Hi Zane,

So sorry to hear about your situation. Times like this are never easy. I will keep you in my thoughts.

I am a brand new member so cannot private message you until I have made three posts but was wondering if you still have the chronological CDs available? If so, what are you asking for them?

Look forward to your response.

Thanks,

Chris

Hi Chris,

I have all of them available *except* volumes 26, 30, 40 and 43, which I recently just sold to another board member.

I am currently asking $15.00 per "Chronological..." CD (which includes free shipping), but if buying in bulk, I will definitely reduce the price.

Best regards,

Zane

Unfortunately, no. My copies are of the shorts are poor quality.

It is with a very heavy heart that due to severe financial issues I'm currently facing, I have to start parting with various collections I have acquired over the years, and one of these includes my entire Bing Crosby collection on CD and DVD. Before starting to list these items on places such as eBay, I wanted to put out feelers to see if anyone on here would be interested in any of the items I have (as I want these to have a new home where they will be appreciated by fellow Bing fans).

My CD collection includes nearly every commercial recording of Bing's that was put out on CD, from the entire "Chronological/Through the Years" series, the rare "Harry Lillis" series, special ICC-only releases, and much much more. If there is a version listed on the "Bing Crosby Discography" section, I likely have it. There are also some Redmond Nostalgia CDs, as well.

If anyone on the board is interested, feel free to reply to me privately with the item or items you are interested in and we'll start from there.

Has anyone picked up the new Blu Rays of the first four films from Kino Lorber? I'm wondering if they are of better quality that the Universal DVD releases from over a decade ago.

Hi Jeremy,

I have called the library at Michigan State University, and they have told me that apparently it's just a broken link, and they think it can be fixed. The person who should be able to fix it (the head of the Voice Library) wasn't in his office at the moment, but he should be back soon. I have his name and phone number and will follow up soon. I will let you know if the link can be foxed so that you may be able to listen to the John Salisbury show (and me, too, because I'd love to hear it!).

Best,

AGF

Anton,

I assume the contact from MSU never followed up with you? I just checked the link again today (because I, too, would be fascinated to hear this at last), and it still wasn't working, at least for me.

Thank you for the input! The HD version of "White Christmas" that is streaming on Netflix looks quite good, as well, so I'm assuming they are from the same HD master?

Out of all of Bing's films, I figured that "White Christmas" stood the best chance of getting a 4K release. I will probably end up getting the blu ray, though - the odds of a 4K release are likely very slim.

While going through my Bing film/TV collection this weekend, I noticed that I have none of Bing's films on blu-ray, with the exception of the Criterion "King of Jazz" blu-ray from last year. I know that there are only a few that have been released on blu-ray, but for those films that have been and for those on this board who are in possession of them, are there any films that noticeably *better* on blu-ray versus DVD. I suspect that "White Christmas" probably looks very good on blu-ray (I'm surprised this hasn't had a 4K release) - are there any others that are worth the upgrade?

I have been patiently waiting for this one to be (re) released for years. I can't state how many times I went back and forth about bidding on eBay or buying directly via other third party sellers the expensive Japanese pressing. I was VERY close last fall, when I was alerted that this was going to happen. Thankfully, I held back. I'm sending my check to Perry tomorrow.

I'm very much looking forward to hearing this one. Once again a huge thank you to Sepia and (I assume) the ICC for making this happen.

Not a happy Bing fan. Wonder what else they have messed up.

Ron,

As mentioned earlier in this thread, Time Life is notorious for editing the content on their DVD sets. This has happened with the Dean Martin sets, Jackie Gleason, etc. As to why they edit the content, the most logical guess I have would be music rights, and Time Life's unwillingness to pay to get the usage cleared for the respective songs. This is why you may see at the beginning what stars are supposed to appear, and then not end up seeing them at all!

I don't know what budget Time Life has for each set they produce, but one could guess that it isn't a whole lot.

Well, at least we're not surprised at the major amount of editing done to these Bing specials, those specials were the only thing NOT already available elsewhere.   How's your report on the Bing 50th Anniv. show?   I believe that was an hour and a 1/2 originally (not sure of that) how much of that remains still on the Time Life set?

Lee, the 50th only clocks in around a little over 45 minutes. I haven't had time yet to do a thorough review to determine *what* was cut, though!

I will also post updates on these specials which have been truncated, in case anyone is curious. This is just going by my memory (and off-air copies of some items that I have):

February 27, 1972 - "Bing Crosby and Friends" (NBC) - originally an hour-long special on NBC clocks in at a little over 29 minutes on the new DVD.

December 3rd 1975 - "Merry Christmas Fred, From The Crosby’s" (CBS)  - This one clocks in at a little over 33 minutes on the new DVD.

December 1st 1976 - "Bing Crosby’s White Christmas" (CBS)  - This one clocks in at a little over 32 minutes on the new DVD.

October 13th 1957 - "The Edsel Show" (CBS) - Unfortunately, this is only 21 minutes of the full 65 minute broadcast. It is definitely sourced from the videotape. Out of all the shows on the DVD set, this was one that I was hoping would be the complete.

February 29, 1960 - "The Bing Show for Oldsmobile" (ABC) - This has a little over 14 minutes of the entire episode.

The "Bing Crosby: A Life in Pictures" comes in the 4-DVD set (with the blue spine). The booklet also contains a brief, two page episode guide for the 10 DVDs ("Legendary" is not included).

This set does not come in any box, just 3 DVD sets (the 4 DVD set, the 6 DVD set, and the 1 DVD "Legendary" set) in shrinkwrap.

The "Legendary" DVD now has the "Time Life" logo added to the back, but I assume the content is exactly the same as the original DVD.

Disc 1 on the 4 DVD set 1 is the exact transfer of Disc 1 from the "Bing Crosby: The Television Specials, Vol 1" (including title menus), and Disc 3 of the 4 DVD set is the exact transfer (including the Title Menus) of Disc 1 from the "Bing Crosby: The Television Specials, Vol 2".

A curiousity - Disc 9 in the series is actually an exact replica of "The Carol Burnet

I watched the 30 minute infomercial yesterday, and that was enough for me to scrape the funds together and "take the plunge" on this set. Like Lee, I am going into this knowing that there will be edits to these specials. The infomercial and the other press verbiage does not use the terms "complete" or "unedited" at all, so I know what I'm in for. And despite that some of the shows were previously released by HLC a few years ago, I'm okay with sending a message to Time Life and HLC that we would like more of these released.

Supposedly these are supposed to ship out later this week. I will report back in once I have my set in hand.

"Dear Zane Johnson,

Thank you for contacting Time Life Customer Service.

We apologize for the confusion, but the Best of Bing Crosby will begin takings orders for next week. It was being evaluated for enough customer interest, but that phase has passed and been approved. Please check our website periodically, once it is posted there again we will begin taking orders for it.

Thank for you drawing our attention to this, David!

I managed to take a look at the link before they took it down. I see that all of the shows previously released on DVD by HLC Enterprises are included, so for anyone who missed out the first time around, this will be a good opportunity to get those shows. Even though there is duplication of the content, this will still be worth picking up!

As stated above, though, I am curious as to how complete these shows will be. For those shows which were previously released a few years ago by HLC, those clearances should be fine. But, Time Life is not known to vigorously pursue music and celebrity clearances, unlike Shout Factory (for example). Most of the content on Dean Martin Shows on DVD, other than the Dean Martin "Uncut" DVD, was chopped up quite a bit on certain episodes. The Jackie Gleason set also had edits to it. The one set I have of Carol Burnett doesn't appear to be cut up, but I'm not certain, as I purchased that set basically for Bing only (which will now be included on this set it appears?). I'm hoping for the best, however.

On the plus side, the Edsel show should now be sourced from the original videotape instead of the inferior kinescope that's been previously released on non-official DVDs. Here's the only known current source for the videotape version:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ze0Az9tdkHg&t=811

I wonder if they will now be saving this set for a fall release, in time to market it for the Christmas holiday?

The sound quality is very good thus far on "Among My Souvenirs", even on the very early recordings (I'm on disc one currently).
