Jarbie I agree whole-heartedly, Some of the numbers on this set are quite good quality as you have pointed out - But, way too many instrumentals on this set - I have more to follow, that you and others here, may be pleased with - I'll keep you posted!

I went to the Bing Crosby Restaurant in San Diego, back in 2010 - and It was a Beautiful Place - The Food Was Good Too - But, I have to admit, it was fairly quiet the day I was there - Bing Restaurant was attached to a mall - it should have been doing better business - But with the economy at the time - It was probably tough to get anyone in there - The prices as I recall, were moderate to high - But, it was a pretty High Class Place - At least the looks of it was - Anyway, I wish it was still here -

For me, BING CROSBY has a warmth in his voice that is like no one else - I heard it said once, that if you were feeling kind of down and out, he had a sort of reassurance in his voice, that made you feel everything was going to be alright. I also feel that, unlike any other singer, or most other singers, BING seems to be singing directly to you. Not at you. Making the listening experience, almost personal. BING was also way ahead of his time, with soulful interpretations of songs like "Honeysuckle Rose," "Black Moonlight" from The CBS Recordings, for example, when BING was just about to be overtaken by Rock and Roll, and R&B. By the last few years, in the seventies, BING was recapturing the vocal techniques of his earlier years, such as The Forties, and particularly, The Fifties. I read somewhere that someone had said BING unlike other singers sang the rhythm. Which is a more modern approach. Going for more of the notes in a song than some of the other vocalists, who sang straight out. Anyway, just a few thoughts.

General Discussion » Copyrights - European Union extension of protection to 70 years » 21/4/2011 6:05 pm |
I do see the point - I heard someone once say (I can't remember who) that if Copyrights went on indefinitely, Shakespeare (or presumably, relatives) would still be collecting royalties - Most feel Royalties should run to an end at some point - Otherwise, it goes on forever - Whereas, a wealthy individual passing on his stocks and holdings - That sort of thing can be handled contractually, by private parties - so that can be indefinite - But, I can't think of a good argument against re-copyrighting indefinitely - Except the one made by Richard - Which implies that copyright holders such as, MCA have copyrights (I'm thinking of BING) and, don't make enough of the material available to the public - And, for whatever argument, or political reasoning don't release music that people want, and would sell -

Richard, when you speak of recordings from The Bing Crosby Show, are you talking about the TV series BING had in the sixties? Because, he definitely, sang in those episodes. So, there have to be recordings available from that show. I was talking on another blog recently, regarding one episode of the TV series. And, in one of these episodes BING sings the old Rocker, "Kansas City". And he sings it, at least for the time, quite convincingly, Like a Rocker. Any thoughts?

I'm wondering if BING made any other separate CBS recordings after 1956, without Clooney, that we have yet to hear? I'm thinking yes. But, I am not sure. Anyone know? Obviously, he kept recording But, I'm only thinking of CBS related material.

I think you're right Jarbie. But, I do see or rather, hear Bing's style in Dean Martin and Perry Como and, perhaps Pat Boone - Though no one really sounds exactly like Bing. Which may have been your point. And, you're quite right, those you mentioned did seem to have their own recognition.
