Peter Falk

The part of 'Columbo' was apparently written for Bing. Bing decided not to take on the role and stayed (at that time) 'retired', the part going instead to Peter Falk, who had appeared in 'Robin and the Seven Hoods'.

It has been reported that he has died at the age of 83.

Columbo is an indelible characterisation and it is difficult to think of anyone other than Falk in the role. I wonder what Bing would have done with the part?

Re: Peter Falk

Yes, Falk made the Columbo part a classic.

I suspect that many people would imagine that Bing in the role would have created some composite of his popular movie characterizations...maybe a more street-wise O'Malley who dropped out of the seminary and joined the police force.  But I wonder if Bing might have surprised everyone by showing completely new dimensions in his acting range?

As for Falk,  I keep imagining him entering the gates of the afterlife in his rumpled Columbo character's overcoat, stopping and turning to say to the gatekeep, "...uh, just one more thing?"

Re: Peter Falk

Unrelated to Bing, but has anyone seen the Peter Falk movie "Roomates"? A great movie that I haven't been able to watch since my grandfather died in 2002.
