A fascinating item. Thanks Malcolm, but I'd go much further than you because I think it is pretty well essential watching for all those who have the book. It sets a frame around the background to the book - the delays in production, the change in approach as compared to volume one, and includes quite a lot of interesting background.
Fascinating to contemplate what the first volume would be like if the same resources had been available to Giddins when he was compiling that.

Re: Gary Giddins - Volume Two

Thank you Malcolm that was very entertaining and interesting.
Just hope the book goes well and that Gary completes Bing's life before my life is completed.
Thanks again.

Re: Gary Giddins - Volume Two

Along with their "Louis and Bing" sale, Mosaic Records posted an article on their Daily Jazz Gazette on Bing Crosby Swinging on a Star with a picture of the cover and a link to an interview with Giddins.

Go to the Mosaic website, select Jazz Gazette and scroll down, it is currently the 4th item.
http://www.mosaicrecords.com/
Below is a link to the article (I haven't verified whether it is one that has been linked elsewhere in this thread):

Also, further down on the Mosaic Jazz Gazette, there is a link to Nate Chinen's WBGO 2018 holiday gift guide, since Mosaic's Savory set is on his list. Giddin's biography also makes the list. Below is a link:

Nice to see the book being plugged on jazz sites. Maybe enough copies will sell to keep Gary busy for another 17 years. Hopefully he'll be a bit quicker and we'll all be around to read it.

Re: Gary Giddins - Volume Two

I don't want to ruin the book for anyone who hasn't gotten it but I would love to talk about the book!

Please shoot me an email at davidlobosco@yahoo.com. I would love to share what I took away from the book. We can start a reading group!

Re: Gary Giddins - Volume Two

That is well-deserved news! Any way to find how the book is selling? That will certainly determine the fate of Volume 3.

Re: Gary Giddins - Volume Two

I recently told my wife about how excited I would be to read a volume 3 of Bing's life.

My wife, who is not a book reader, said "Why would you be so excited to read it. You know how that book ends?"

She is lucky I love her so much!

Re: Gary Giddins - Volume Two

I have experienced over many years how my interest in Bing has brought out a lot of goodness in people who knew how much I was a Bing fan.
Just a week or two ago a man saw a copy of book 1 on Bing that he bought it and presented it to me.
So some person had bought the book and put it in a second hand store. I don’t know how much they paid for it.
I will now have a copy in Australia and a copy in the U.S.

Re: Gary Giddins - Volume Two

Awards like this may help towards a volume 3, I guess (and hope). Thank you Malcolm, for this news.

Re: Gary Giddins - Volume Two

Gentleman,
With apologies if this has been covered elsewhere.
Does anyone have any news or just the current writing status and publication possibilities of volume three?
With a view to this, I read on these pages it was up for a prize but does anyone know how well it sold?  I appreciate this must be a seemingly ungrateful question just a handful of years away from volume two-  but I read some recent correspondence published within the letters pages of the Winter 2021 "Bing" magazine, which casts doubt over a third volume. With some appropriate musical accompaniment … "Please", "Say It Isn't So"????
