Re: TRIBUTES TO BING

Frank Startup has just emailed me as follows.
"You probably already know this, but I see, from the current edition of the Radio Times. that on Sunday, 15th. October, Clare Teal will be 'marking the 40th. anniversary of the death of superstar crooner Bing Crosby' on Radio 2 between 9 and 11 in the evening."

Great news!

Re: TRIBUTES TO BING

Further to Frank's message, I've just noticed that there is a very nice "Today's Pick" box advertising tonight's Radio 2 "Bing Crosby in the Road To Rock'n'Roll" programme on the relevant listings page in the Review section of Saturday's edition of the UK newspaper, "The Times".

Hopefully this will highlight the broadcast to more people than would ordinarily have been aware of it...

I commend the programme to all. But someone should have told Elizabeth McGovern that the second vowel in "Ampex" is an E, not an A! She consistently gets it wrong!

Re: TRIBUTES TO BING

Just played (Friday 11.00am Pacific time) the BBC show.
Interesting too. Maybe she was thinking of Tam...
Thursday's Centralia Chronicle gave about 8"of column to the Roxy double bill on Saturday.
Just hope now that the punters turn up - it won't be through the lack of trying.
A well known identity 'fell off the perch' and his service is at 1.00pm Saturday, our movie double starts at 2.00pm. Not sure if it will make a difference or not.
I've had good printed space in the press.

Re: TRIBUTES TO BING

For my double bill today (Saturday 14/10) Errol Flynn followed by Bing there were 25 punters attended. I was a bit disappointed but that was more than some attendance at first run movies (we show Friday, Saturday, Monday 7.00pm). Sold one sing along CD. Hope to sell more by leaving them on show at theatre.

Re: TRIBUTES TO BING

Re John Walton's programme (4 above), it is intended to re-broadcast the Crooners Club Bing Special at 7.00 pm (UK time) on New Years Eve.  Probably a better time for US listeners!

Re: TRIBUTES TO BING

In addition to the above mentioned tribute programmes, there is another tribute on YouTube:

THE JOHNNY HOLIDAY SHOW - A TRIBUTE TO BING CROSBY
Recorded live on October 14, 2017 at the Cicada Club in downtown Los Angeles. Featuring The Johnny Holiday Dance Orchestra with The Honey Taps Dancers, Rob Minkoff, Lizzy Shapiro, Rick Medlin, Jr, Christine Nelson, Benedict Brydern, and John Reynolds.

I recently discovered this and haven't found the time yet to watch it in it's entirety (1h47m). However, I sampled parts of the programme, and although of course it isn't Bing who's singing, the programme and selection is interesting.

You'll find it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KpLU6LVQyWc

Re: TRIBUTES TO BING

And here's another interesting item, recorded in August 2017 and, in my opinion, it can be seen as yet another tribute to Bing:

Phil Crosby Golden Age All-Stars life at the Cicada Club
Recorded August 12, 2017. Maxwell DeMille proudly presents Phil Crosby's Golden Age All-Stars -- Mr. Crosby's wonderful cabaret show honoring his grandfather -- the legendary singer, Academy Award winning actor and American icon Bing Crosby.

Again, I haven't found the time yet to see the show in it's entirety (1h53m) but did peek and watched some of the performances by Phil Crosby. From a distance, there is a similarity in appearance with his grandfather, there also are some familiar mannerisms, but despite the genes Bing's voice remains unique. My opinion, of course. Anyway, it's interesting to see Phil Crosby perform songs made famous by his grandfather.

Re: TRIBUTES TO BING

Quite apartt from the connection with Bing, it's a treat to see great old songs performed by contemporary artistes and to see people dance the way we used to dance. Thanks Frans for those two shows.
