I am reading Kon-Tiki, Thor Heyerdahl's account of his 1947 voyage by raft from South America to Polynesia, and when he finally lands on an out-of-the-way island off the Raroia reef, one of the first things the local chief asks him is if he knows Bing Crosby! This certainly shows how widespread Bing's fame was at that time.

Jim, I recall enjoying reading that book many years ago, but I had forgotten all about that mention of Bing! I also recommend Heyerdahl's book about Easter Island: Aku Aku.
