Patty Andrews

On my blog I wrote a story on the remaining Andrews Sister - Patty Andrews.

She is now 94 and in failing health, but she is a remarkable woman and the key figure in one of the greatest female groups of all time:

Re: Patty Andrews

A nice story. The girls were a good trio and made some great recordings with Bing. In a good number of their records with Bing there was nearly always that 'little break' of a second (if you know what I mean).
'South America' ....supposin' you need a vacation (break), Brazil is the place... etc. Seemed that was always a part of the routine.
There was a radio announcer on Sydney's 2KY named John Harper. He like Bing but not the Andrew sisters. When he had to play an Andrew Sisters record it might get about a third of the way through and he would make a statement "I'm not playing that", then the record would stop and you could hear the old 78 smashing against the wall.
Many years later one of the girls came to Sydney and had apparently heard about John. They met and he was quite impressed and I believe they got to the airwaves again with John for the full playing of their record.
Now, the question is: Was their surname Andrew or Andrews?  They are referred to as The Andrew Sisters, but then referred to as Patty Andrews etc.
I know a bloke in Thirroul and his surname is Andrews.

Re: Patty Andrews

They are always referred to as The Andrews Sisters, never The Andrew Sisters. The family name was originally Andreos but their father changed it to Andrews when he arrived from Greece,

Re: Patty Andrews

I love some of the duets Bing sang with them on radio.  A lot of humor as well as good singing.

Re: Patty Andrews

Patty and Maxene Andrews also had nice solo voices as well. You know, I never heard Laverne sing without her sisters. Has anyone heard solo Laverne?

Re: Patty Andrews

Sad news indeed. Another link broken... One of my earliest Crosby memories is of putting on an LP loaned to me by a neighbour - I was in my very early teens - lowering the tone-arm into the lead-in groove and hearing for the first time the opening bars of "Quicksilver". From that day on, Bing's tracks with the Andrews Sisters have been right up there with my all-time favourites.

Most of the news bulletins I heard on Radio 4 (BBC radio's main "talk" channel) today carried an item about her passing. Will watch later to see if it makes the TV bulletins

Re: Patty Andrews

So sorry to hear about Patty. What a combo Bing and the Andrews Sisters! I loved seeing the sisters in Abbott and Costello movies too!!!

Peace and Love!

Re: Patty Andrews

Nothing on the UK TV news bulletins I watched last night, but the BBC home-page had an item which in turn has links to other tributes from various sources.
