Whatever Happened To Singing

Nice article in 'Word Magazine', February 2012 http://www.wordmagazine.co.uk/archive

Some quotes 'The condenser microphone was first mass produced in 1928. Around the same time the career of Bing Crosby was starting to get off the ground. Crosby was as much the master of the instrument that you sang into as Louis Armstrong was the master of the one you blew through  - - - To many rock scholars Bing's the guy who duetted with David Bowie - - - A bit of a camp joke. Lord cardigan. The godfather of cosy. In fact Bing Crosby is where modern pop music begins, largely because of the microphone -- -  in his brilliant career he proved that he could master just about any song, - - - he's most closely identified with an enchanting nearness. Bing is singing to you, not to the back of some notional stalls. --- vouchsafing a confidence.  ------ Crosby and Armstrong's 'Gone Fishin' is the musical equivalent of a game of keepy uppy played between Pele and Messi. Few singers could even think to sing like they do, let alone execute the plan.'

About a page of this during which Bing's voice is described as a bell of an instrument.

I look forward to a whole new generation of rockers becoming Bing fans!

Many thanks to Andrew Preshous for drawing my attention to this.

Re: Whatever Happened To Singing

When I read BING magazine No. 159 I noticed reference to Will Friedwald's 'new' book A BIOGRAPHICAL GUIDE TO THE GREAT JAZZ & POP SINGERS (2010) and I've just begun to read it. Fascinating! The entry on Bing rates 13 pages although I've not got that far yet. For me the only downside is the small print so i have to be sure I read it in good light.
