My Life With Bing-My First Years With Bing, differences?

As an avid reader in general I adore reading about Bing, I cannot describe my admiration for Malcom Macfarlane’s Day by Day, only after I read it I felt that I was actually knew something about Bing and it is the most useful and complete guide to Bing’s life. I have found very interesting information in all Bing’s book written by biographers or associates of his butI hold a special place for Kathryn’s books.
I believe that a wife is able to understand her husband better than even his children, so I was very fascinated to read her three books. The writing style in all of them was very vibrant. And they were more than 500 photographs in all of them.

In 2004 (incidentally the year that I was born) there was a re-printed My life With Bing with the new title My First Years with Bing. I own a hardcover copy of the 1983 first edition, it’s 351 pages book with 250 photographs all in Black and White. And I am wondering if there are any substantial differences between the 1983 and the 2004 version? I would like to know if there are different pictures, another introduction, possible changes in the text, or even if the same photographs are in color.
Judging by the online description they seem identical (minus the title).

I have a copy of My Last Years With Bing (luckily I received a signed copy by complete surprise!) and a fair bit of the photographs are in color, maybe the reprint has them in color? I've not gotten around to snagging a copy of the the either prints of the book, if I get the reprint I will let you know if there are any substantial differences that I can see.

Re: My Life With Bing-My First Years With Bing, differences?

I have two copies of My Life With Bing.

Both were released in 1983. One is printed by Golden Press in NSW for the Australian and New Zealand Market. The second I picked up in the biggest 2nd hand book store in Brisbane. It is the American edition printed by Collage. Not sure how it came to be in a Brisbane store but there is a printed message on the inside cover:

"This book is part of a limited pre-publication edition available to Bing's friends at the 1983 Bing Crosby National Pro-Am Golf Tournament."

I wonder how many golfers were disappointed that they missed out on their limited edition whisky that year!

I'll have to compare the two versions to see if the English was altered for those of us in the Commonwealth.

I doubt it because the American edition was also for the UK market.

Delighted that John and Aaron have unique sounding copies of this book.
I'm so belatedly sorry, Pantelis that I can't throw any light on the differences between the 1983 and 2004 editions of the first book, as I only own and have seen a second hand copy of the earlier edition ("My Life With Bing"). In my copy, all the photographs are black and white.

I do remember in the UK, aged fourteen and deliberately attempting to manipulate my mother into buying it for me by lengthily hanging my nose over a pristine brand new, freshly published copy of this in Nottingham's now late WH Smith bookseller's store. This muse had eventually (and most surprisingly) worked three years earlier over a biography of the comedy partner of Bing's golfing and racing buddy, Stan Laurel. No such luck that time when on turning to the book's price of (I think), twenty pounds (an unheard of fortune, forty-three years ago for a single volume but as Aaron has just stated, the US ((imported?) edition was also for the UK market), my mother quickly replaced it on the shelf with a definitive exclamation of "WHAT??? You can forget that!" as I was then very quickly guided out of the store.

However, fast forward to twenty-odd years later and my late wife (knowing what a huge Bing fan I am, knowing this story and knowing I was still without a copy) presented me with a beautifully signed one by Kathryn. Needless to say I smugly took it to show my mother that very same Christmas Day. Life can certainly certainly have its improvements, can't it?

I own a 1983 copy  that also says "This book is part of a limited pre-publication edition available to Bing's friends at the 1983 Bing Crosby National Pro-Am Golf Tournament."
I do think the language is the same, and it is a nice point Aaron. The book was republished in 2004 with a new title (My First Years with Bing), I have seen it in ebay and amazon, that happened just after the release of My Last Years with Bing.

I adore this story Ian about the book, it is indeed very nice to have this signed by Kathryn, my copy is not signed but the Last Years with Bing is a signed one, and I have some of Dr. Sullivan's books with the signature of her as the illustrator and of course the author's.

Let me rephrase the questions this way, does anyone have a 2004 edition of the book?

I am guessing that it has only black and white photos but I am not certain.

Re: My Life With Bing-My First Years With Bing, differences?

Thank you, Pantelis for your kind words.
The irony was, my mother had no memory of the incident when I smugly showed her the book.
Laughingly she did respond that there's the proof on what a dreadful mother she had been.
I am sorry, Pantelis, I've never even seen a copy of the 2004 book.
My guess on it just containing black and white  photographs would be the same - unless they wanted at the time to match with the more colourfully illustrated, "My Last Years With Bing".
I wonder if it's worth you writing a letter to "Bing" magazine? There may be someone off this forum who has a copy who may be able to provide you with a definitive answer.
