I recently had a video clip digitized from a disc of the 1931 short film, Darn Tootin'. In the middle of the short is about a 2 1/2-minute scene of Dixie Lee Crosby signing "I Apologize."  I came across this clip thanks to Dr. A. Jackson and Bryan Kendall's "Legendary Saxophonist Collection" by Keepe Publishing House, who gave me permission to share.  A friend of mine pointed out that it almost sounds like she is maybe playfully poking fun at Bing's rendition with her own, or at the very least trying to imitate him.  Here are both versions...enjoy and let me know what you think!

Dixie Lee Crosby - "I Apologize" (1931, Darn Tootin'):

Hello everyone!  My name is Chris Hammond.  I am in East Tennessee and I run the Dixie Lee website/blog, https://www.dixieleefan.com

I first learned about Bing and Dixie when I was boy listening to Bing's Christmas album.  I later learned that Dixie Lee (Wilma Wyatt) was born in Harriman, Tennessee, about 30 minutes from where I grew up.  I believe that I may actually be very distantly related to her Scarbrough line through my great, great grandmother's family.  I was fortunate enough to work with Bing and Dixie's granddaughter, Dixie Lee Crosby Goodwin, who sadly is no longer with us, on getting a Tennessee state historical marker installed in Harriman for Dixie Lee.

My goal is to research and preserve Dixie's legacy here in her home state of Tennessee, while also sharing more about her story and career.

Welcome to the board! Look forward all you have to share. By the way you are the 400th member to this board. Congrats!

Very cool!!! You all should create badges for that kinda stuff!  Love the site.  Thank you for the kind words!

Great site dedicated to Dixie. I have a few recordings of her and she had a cute sound.
I don't think she was made for the Hollywood scene, but I think she was genuinely good woman.

Two deaths that I feel Bing never got over was Eddie Lang and Dixie Lee.

Thank you!  I feel like she hasn't been treated to fairly by Hollywood and Bing historians and biographers.  She was way more talented than I think most realize.  I agree with you...not sure she was the Hollywood type...in that regard, she was a woman ahead of her time (not wanting to be told what to do all the time, pleasing people she didn't like, etc.).   I think today, she would have been applauded for being genuine.

Today marks what would have been Dixie Lee's 112th birthday.  She was born in a little town called Harriman, Tennessee, on November 4, 1909.  To celebrate her....watch this little catchy dance number she did in the 1929 film, Happy Days (beware of the weird clown that comes in singing too, haha!  Dixie is the one singing and dancing in the beginning of the video).

Tomorrow, November 4, 2021, is what would have been Dixie's 112th birthday if she were still alive today.  To celebrate her and her memory, I just published a blog entry over at my fan site dedicated to her, https://www.dixieleefan.com

I really enjoy researching her life and career and learning more about her, which is what led me to create the fan site/blog.  I feel like she has been forgotten and treated (not necessarily intentionally) as just a footnote in Bing's amazing life, story, and career.  When in fact, her own life, story, and career are just as fascinating!  I hope to learn and share even more with you all about this amazing woman!  Happy 112th Dixie!  You are celebrated and remembered!

You can access the birthday post directly here: https://www.dixieleefan.com/blog/phgamiz0586aow9q3kpgx5wvh2t4p8
