RIP Andre Previn

The American conductor and pianist Andre Previn has died at the age of 89.

His career started in the 1950s as an orchestrator and conductor for Hollywood movies.

He is probably best known to UK audiences for his prime-time BBC TV series in the 1970s, “Andre Previn’s Music Night”, in which he presented popular classics played by the London Symphony Orchestra, of which he was Principal Conductor from 1969-1979.

He also famously appeared in an hilarious skit with Morecambe and Wise on their Christmas Special of 1971.

He was a prodigiously gifted jazz pianist, and it’s in this role that he is here introduced by Bing on 7th November 1963...

Re: RIP Andre Previn

Whilst looking for video clips of Bing with Andre Previn, I came across this site. Has anyone ever bought DVDs from this source, and if so, what’s the quality like..?

A very interesting find, Jeremy. I'm afraid that I have no knowledge of the source but they have a wide range of fascinating material on offer, it seems on a "recorded to order" basis, (and much appears to originate from off-air recordings).

Personally my experiences with other organisations offering DVD-R (and CD-R) discs have not been wholly successful. There is one clue on the site that might not inspire confidence - it shows an update of 27 August 2018 warning of problems, and there have been no later updates. https://www.entertainmentoutpost.com/apps/webstore/

The same page on the site mentions taking on part time help to "join the team" but other comments suggest that the team might be of one!.

Re: RIP Andre Previn

Thanks for that, Richard...

I wonder whether the stills displayed in the Clairol show listing represent the quality of the DVD itself..?  If so, it looks pretty good.

They also list the ‘36 “Anything Goes”, which I would love a decent copy of, but in this case the stills in the listing are fairly obviously production shots.

Getting back to Mr Previn, he was musical director on the Clairol show for ABC of 24th December 1962 and Bing’s special for CBS of 7th November 1963. He also wrote the music for the 1974 musical, “The Good Companions”, with lyrics by Johnny Mercer.

Bing and Mercer recorded three numbers from the show (“The Pleasure Of Your Company”, “Good Companions” and, “And Points Beyond”) in Los Angeles on October 17th 1974. These tracks were included on the album, “The Pleasure Of Your Company”.

A friend of mine was the musical director on the original London production of “The Good Companions” and he always said that Previn was charming, urbane and very easy to work with.
