In the April/May 2015 issue of the AARP (it is an American medical fund) Magazine there is an article about Rich Conaty - announcer WFUV-FM New York programme called The Big Broadcast. Sunday nights 8.00pm to midnight).
In the article there are photos of Duke Ellington, Ethel Waters, Cab Calloway and our Bing (looks like a shot from either of his 2 Universal film so).
Rich says ..."There were plenty of intimate singers pre-Bing, but he put crooning on the map. And he was a jazz singer, too, a solid scat singer".
"..... I was a teenager and Bing Crosby was doing Christmas specials..."
Rich has about 5,000 78's and a couple of thousand CD's.
He spins tunes from the 20's and 30's. He is 60 and lives in Hudson, NY.
The article heading is "All that (Prewar) Jazz.
