Louis Armstrong and Gary Crosby

I'd be interested in everyone's take on the recordings Louis Armstrong made with Gary Crosby in 1955. Do you think Armstrong was just doing it as a favor to Bing. Gary really isn't a bad singer...

Re: Louis Armstrong and Gary Crosby

I saw Gary and Louis at the old Sydney Stadium in the 1950’s. Never got to meet him though.
Louis was to keep an eye on Gary during their tour. In Sydney 2KY presenter Brian Howard was asked by Bing to keep an eye on Gary as  well.
Brian used to present a ‘Bing and Swing’ programme on 2KY.
There was a Bing and Swing rugby league side playing in the Balmain District junior league competition on Sundays. Team colours - naturally - were Blue and Gold. They did pretty well over the years.
1966 I got to meet Phil when he was at the Hilton.
I knew Brian and he gave me newspaper clippings of Bing. He contributed to a service that sent him clippings from any printed info on Bing. He was pally with Bing.

That's an entertaining duet and Gary did well.

Re: Louis Armstrong and Gary Crosby

Superb.
Literary controversies aside, I believe Gary to have been the most performance talented of all of Bing's children. His vocals had an authority and maturity way beyond his years. His superb sense of rhythm, relaxation and yet drive makes him a performer my ears are automatically drawn towards. As with his duets with his father, he matches Satch perfectly with his harmonies. He was a convincing actor, too with presence and a natural ability. Both in light and more serious parts.

Gary and Bing would have made great Rap singers. I do not care for Rap but in some songs Bing and Gary sound like Rap singers.

Re: Louis Armstrong and Gary Crosby

I don't mind the combination of Pops and Gary. Not sure about it being a favour, David. These recordings may have been done for their upcoming tour. Gary, as Ron mentioned did come to Australia. Even though Gary doesn't give the exact date in Going My Own Way, I think I worked it out to be around 1955 that Louis and Gary were in Australia. I used the front cover to the program in The Bingville Buglers - ICC Meeting #29. I've tried uploading the image here but having trouble with this at present.
I don't have LP or CD versions of any of Gary and Satchmo's duets. So happy David for you to post more of these if you have any.
I do have a 78rpm of Ko Ko Mo/Struttin' With Some Barbecue but I have no means of making a digital transfer. My 78 is released on the Australian Columbia label, but I'm assuming these would have been recorded for Decca?
Here's a YouTube link for Louis and Gary performing Struttin' with Some Barbecue on The Ed Sullivan Show:

Re: Louis Armstrong and Gary Crosby

Oh my goodness, Aaron that link to Gary and Louis on Ed Sullivan's show was beyond superb. Thank you.
I felt it really validated my admiration for Gary Crosby's high performing skills. I have never seen the two performing together, before and it was so joyful. It didn't seem to matter who Louis was placed with - he just made each pairing appear so natural. Obviously he and Gary's father had to be tops when it came to this. I am so grateful that he and Bing made films together - especially "High Society".

Here's a link to what I thought was a long lost joint appearance they both undertook on the late David Frost's chat show in 1971.

Now that made me smile, Carmela!
Do you have in mind the patter Gary undertook under Bing's harmony in their "Sam's Song" single?
I must confess I struggle with rap but then again, I am fifty seven, going on one hundred and seven!

Yes, even though the condition of this David Frost interview is not in the best shape, it is marvellous that it survives as it marks the last time that Bing and Louis worked together. They had taped an appearance on The Pearl Bailey Show a couple of weeks before. Andy Williams also appeared.

Yes, Ian. I am not a Rap person either. I am 62 and a second wave Elton John fan from 1974. Met him many times. Amazing man!!!

Oh, how marvellous. Thank you, again, Aaron. I have never seen this with the four of them. Pearl Bailey is so irresistibly warm, talented and lovely. Just like Louis. It took me a long time to warm to Andy Williams (through no fault of his own) and I was then lucky to see him perform "live" during his final two tours of the UK.

Isn't the internet and YouTube incredible? Over forty years ago in my town's public library, within a 1970's biography of David Frost, I saw a photo-plate of this interview. Within the confines of that pre-internet period (and with just three UK television channels - but all the better for it) it never crossed my mind that I would ever be able to see this.

Goodness, me, Carmela! You've met Elton John (many times?). Where does this end? James Cagney, Kathryn Crosby (I try not to repeat this too often so as not upset our very own Pantelis on here) and now Elton John! What were the circumstances - and is there a particular song of his and Bernie Taupin's you can imagine may have been suitable for Bing to have sung? I'm going to prematurely submit "Your Song".

Re: Louis Armstrong and Gary Crosby

"Blue Eyes" would have been perfect for Bing, infact Elton sings it in a Bing sort of style. Back in the 90's up until the early 2000's my friends and I would go to hotel in NYC where Elton and band were staying and wait for them to come out. Elton would always stop and sign stuff for me. He got to know me and stopped for me all the time. After Princess Dianna died and he came in concert, I was near hotel with my friend Robert, Elton stopped lifted me up and gave me a huge hug. Everyone was shocked. I had about 100 autographs. All gone now except for one. I sold a lot of stuff when I became sick because I had to wait to get disabilty. I wish I still had everything. I was able to get my music collection back but the memorabilia, I can never get back. I miss those days, we had a ball in the city all day and concerts at night. Great memories. Kathryn told me Elton was next to appear with Bing on Christmas Special. But Bing passed away. They would have been great together. And Elton would have loved performing with Bing. Watch video of Blue Eyes on Youtube and picture Bing singing this song. By the way, the Braves hat Elton wears toward end of film, "Tantrum and Tiaras" was a gift from me.

Re: Louis Armstrong and Gary Crosby

"Blue Eyes" would have been lovely for Bing and Elton to have duetted on, perhaps. Love his white hat in the video. Elton does indeed have certain similarities to Bing's singing style on this one. It's so lovely to read of your encounters with Mr John. So nice that he gives this time to his waiting admirers (while elevating you) and very consistently. I do wish he and Bing, as planned could have worked together. I think it would have been a more sympathetic and naturally warmer pairing than the one with David Bowie.I do remember seeing and enjoying the documentary "Tantrums and Tiaras" around thirty years ago and much of it made me laugh. Is the hat you gave to him the black cap with the red peak?

Re: Louis Armstrong and Gary Crosby

Back to Louis Armstrong and Gary Crosby - I think Louis worked with Gary as a favor to Bing. I think Gary Crosby was a good singer, but I don't think he was on the same level of talent as Louis Armstrong. Gary and Sammy Davis Jr also made a couple recordings together, and I thought the same.

Re: Louis Armstrong and Gary Crosby

I completely agree. Sammy, Louis and Bing were superlative talents, I just think Gary was the most talented of all his seven children. I read in Gary's book that recording wise, he was paired with Sammy and a few other performers to echo his father's notable duets partners. Thanks for posting the one with Louis, as I'd never heard this before. Did Gary and Louis record a full album, together?

Re: Louis Armstrong and Gary Crosby

Ian, The hat is seen toward end of documentary when Elton is coming down elevator. It is an Atlanta Braves hat with an A in the front. He wore it on a couple of filmed events around the same time. My mother always teased me about it because it was not an official hat, it was a $5 hat . She always said to me, "I can't believe he wore that $5 hat!". I tell you one thing, it was better than some of the other hats he wore in that docu. Back to Gary, I love when he tried to sound like Louis. I thought Gary was a good singer but did not care for him as an actor.
