Arthur Tracy - So Do I (1937)

I like Arthur Tracy (1899-1987) but he's no Bing. Here he is with Bing's song "So Do I"...

I really like Arthur Tracy.  First became aware of him from the great Steve Martin movie Pennies From Heaven.   There he sang the title song from the movie with a great dance sequence by a strange looking actor.   I have always liked Tracy's recording of "Pennies From Heaven" more than BIng's, Tracy puts so much empathetic sad feeling into this song it's hard not to be touched.   Sure, Bing's is good, but does not have the emotional impact of Tracy's.   Some years back I got a great Tracy CD, "Street Singer" which was also how he was known.  It's my only Tracy CD but it has all his greatest songs including So Do I and other Tracy classics.

Here's to a fine singer who put unabashed emotion into his songs and was truly memorable.  He is not well known today but should be.

I agree with you 100%. Arthur Tracy is not a singer I would usually like, but he puts so much feeling into his songs. I uploaded to You Tube and to Archive.Org my favorite Arthur Tracy record to date - his version of "Everything I Have Is Yours". That record and "Pennies From Heaven". Tracy also was the last major living cast member of "The Big Broadcast"!

Tracy sang the song well but the first time Bing sang it in PENNIES FROM HEAVEN is incomparable; a superb performance.
