The video David mentioned at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9g_EAG0JuUA&feature=c4-overview&list=UUu0fQh9331GiPfkCbrw_9TQ has some very interesting comments just after the 8 minute mark regarding the Gary Crosby book.

Re: BING CROSBY THE TRUTH BEHIND THE LEGEND

This is what Chris Crosby says in the video about Gary Crosby's book.
“Did you know that there were two books? The first one he turned into the publisher, the publisher turned down because there wasn’t enough dirt in it. He told Gary go back and manufacture some dirt….So Gary went back and put more dirt in it and the publisher published the book. When the other three brothers found out about it, they were furious with Gary and they asked him why he did it and he said sometimes you have to do some things to get it sold in Hollywood. Gary wanted to play Bing in a movie so he had a big incentive for telling that kind of a story.”

Re: BING CROSBY THE TRUTH BEHIND THE LEGEND

I have long assumed that Gary had the help of a ghost writer.  The narrative is very well-written, and effectively leads a reader to feel very sympathetic to young Gary, even though one may recognize a number of naive impressions that an adult Gary ought to have rethought and corrected in the interests of reality.  If, however, Gary actually wrote the book, then it is a shame that he didn't consider doing more productive writing as a career. He had some talent as a singer and actor, we know, but as a writer he might have more easily have distinguished himself from his father's career. And if he were to have written fiction, I would have been grateful if he didn't make it seem like he was writing about any actual persons.
