Biography » Gary Giddins Book - Volume 2 » 23/1/2015 10:12 am

After getting the reply from his publishers I had planned to email Mr Giddins and get his take on what is happening re Volume 2. Checked his website and found there is no way to email him direct, just the email address of an agent to book him for things!

This should make everone laugh I think. I emailed Hachette Book Group (who own the Back Bay and Little Brown imprints) and this is their reply:

Hi Stuart, I'm seeing that the second volume has a publication date in our system of 01/01/2017.   Best,Gaby

Some interesting insight into Bing Crosby from a biography of his costar in this series: Beverly Garland. Including confirmation he was a genuine nice guy and good to work with.

Wind to 2 minutes 30 seconds for Bing Crosby talking about the show.

Below are links to outtakes from the show presented, with tongue in cheek, by the producer Steven Gethers. Part 1 Part 2

I have four network prints of episodes of this on VHS Tape and wonder if others here know the series and enjoyed it?
It only lasted one season on the ABC network in the US. Anyway in it Bing Crosby played Bing Collins a former singer who changed careers becoming  an electrical engineer!!! His character was married with two daughters and in many episodes a song by Bing was sneaked in.

A couple of episodes have been uploaded to YouTube, so you can all see what you think. Part 1 Little Bit of Fresh Danish Part 2 Little Bit of Fresh Danish Part 1 The Estate Venture Part 2 The Estate Venture Part 3 The Estate Venture

We are now in January 2015 and there is still no news on the second volume. There is nothing on Gary Giddins website to suggest it will be coming any time soon. I suspect he hasn't been completely open with people asking about the release of the book. It seems more likely the delay is with the author in completing the book, than with the publisher.

Stuart, I have welcomed you via email as part of the "joining" process.  This, your first posting, I am sure unintentionally, makes me feel too old, because my parents (or at least one of them) thought "crooners" incapable of singing "properly" and disapproved! "Why not Richard Tauber or even Nelson Eddy - at least they can sing".

Alas, my own children and grandchildren are not as influenced by parental (or grand-parental) tastes as you were - they follow more modern idols, who in my opinion quite definately cannot sing.

Well, in his last TV show, Bing sang with David Bowie. Proves how versatile he was, and open to interacting with someone who personified the new music trends!

Try and get hold of: 'On the Air: The Encyclopedia of Old Time Radio' by John Dunning (Oxford University Press 1998). In this you can see that Ken Carpenter was the announcer on many other radio shows. I can list them for you if you would like me too.

This was uploaded onto YouTube recently and included commercials and sponsor tags.

I watched this documentary a few nights ago and was impressed with the many aspects of Bing and his life that were covered. Some nice extras of interviews not in the original broadcast, and the interview with Robert Trachtenberg. I hope PBS' UK afiliate: PBS America (available on Sky and Virgin) will air it soon and to this end I have emailed them.
