Birthday greetings, Bing, up there in the sky.
Probably on the sky golf course whistling and humming and singing.

Ian,
Saw Douglas in a show in London and just waited - may have even been outside his dressing room.
Wilfred in a play in Peterborough and also staying at the same Hotel - the Great Northern - which was a British Transport Hotel (I.e. Railway), for whom I worked.
The - so called fan of Vic Danone - probably not too bright. Imagine saying that to any person you were supposed to be a big fan.
Days of security were just starting in London after the IRA bombings. I managed to get into the Royal Albert Hall to see Shirley Bassey at the 6.00pm performance. I managed to tape her. After the show I realised that when I turned the tape over to record the other side, I didn’t press the cassette in far enough. So we decided to go to the 8.00pm show to finish the tape and, blow me down, if I didn’t get through again undetected.
When living at Wembley Park the TV studios were near by. Shirley Bassey was doing a show. A Rolls Royce was waiting outside for. The back door was open soI poked my head in and said hello to a lady waiting for her - I must admit that I had had a belly full up at The Torch. Don’t thinkI did see her come out.

Lobosco,
Sorry, I thought I read somewhere that she had passed.
She would be in her 60’s as Dennis and I are 1934 models.

Ian,
Forgot to mention that in February 1977 Bing was recording with Fred. I took some info to the hotel about Noon asking if he had time to play go,f at my club in Reading.
About 3.00pm my office phone rang and on saying hello, the voice at the other end said - it’s Bing Crosby here. Couldn’t play as was on a tight schedule and didn’t bring his clubs. I nearly fell out of my chair.
Another little story. The wife of a fellow golfer was visiting her Mum at Stonebridge Park when a big limo pulled up next to her to ask directions. She poked her head in the window and Bing and Fred were in the back. She must have had a surprise look on her face as they said - yes,it is us. They were on their way to the recording studios.
In 1995/96 Denise Crosby came to Sydney. I rang her and spoke to her (I was about 40 mile away). She was performing in Sydney.
Anyway, Denise was the born out of wedlock child to Dennis but she never met Bing. Seems that Bing may have held her responsible, I don’t know. She died a couple of years ago.
I got to interviewDionne Warwick around the same time as she was at the Hilton in Sydney. Went to her room and we spokeforabout45 minutes. I played the interview on my radio programme. She gave me an autographed 10x8photo plus a CD. Also a seat in the dining room but no meal.
In England I met Douglas Fairbanks Jnr and in Peterborough Wilfred Hyde White.
Saw Vic Damon’s at the Palladium. Afterwards at the stage door I waited with others. A bloke had a plastic bags with LP’s in it. when Vic came out this bloke said to him - I’ve got all your records and I really hope you make it one day. Vic said Thanks a lot.

Hello Ian,
Hope I can answer satisfactorily for you in a chronological order,
Saw Gary with Louis Armstrong at the mentioned Sydney Stadium around 1957 or so I suppose, maybe earlier as I left Australia July 1957.
Then it was Bing in Seattle,Bob in LA and Larry at the Crosby office in LA.
Larry asked if they could do anything for me - I mentioned Paramountbut that was a no as Bing had left. Larry offered tickets to Disneyland but I declined as I didn’t wish to be seen as a bludger..
Phil came to Sydney in 65 or 66 and met him for a beer at lunchtime.
Then back to the UK and spoke on the phone to Bing 1968. He was going golfing at Wentworth, which I wasn’t sure where it was. Oh, Bing answered the phones each time.
Then to Canada and back to Aust then back to England in1972.
Spoke on the phone, caddied for Nathaniel and spoke to Harry. Then the Palladium concerts in 76 and 77.
Was sent a thank you note from him after his stage fall. Also sent me inMay 77 tags and stuff from the previous golf tournament in January.
Then at Hofstra I met Kathryn and a yarn and also nephew Howard.
On the plane from Vegas about to take off and Kathryn rang.
Met Lindsay’s son Kevin and wife and also a couple of aunties of Howard.
So, for an Aussie I did pretty good.
I did present on Community Radio in Wollongong and later in Bega - Mainly Bing. Now that I am firmly back in Australia I must get back into it.
I live in Bermagui and cowboy writer Zane Grey fished here in the late 1930’s.
The Billy Connolly film - The Man Who Sued God - was filmed here but it might have a different name in the USA or UK.
Think that just about covers it.
And a bit of trivia- my boss at Hoyts Theatres in Sydney- was the younger brother of drowned Australian Prime Minister Harold. They both died the same year in March and December.
Hope I didn’t carry on too much.
Cheers
Ron

Hello Ian,
Well, I consider myself a very lucky Aussie with having met Bing a couple of times and spoke on the phone and saw 4 Palladium concerts - 2 in each year, opening and closing nights except 1976 when after opening night a couple of nights later as I went to the Montreal Olympics.
In 1955 when I met him in Seattle, he asked what I was doing and was I going to Los Angeles, answered yes, and Bing said go see my brother.
Got lucky and saw Bob do a benefit TVshow on a Sunday then Monday to the Crosby office where I met Larry. Larry asked could they do anything for me - I answered about visiting Paramount but that wasn’t possible as Bing had finished with them. Larry offered me tickets to Disneyland but I declined as I didn’t wish to appear as ‘a bludger’.
About 1965 I met Phil in Sydney as he was at the Chevron Hotel doing a nightclub spot. Had a lunchtime beer with him.
Saw Gary perform in Sydney with Louis Armstrong.
Then in England 1966-68 I spoke on the phone and saw him at his hotel.
Returned to Australia and then off to UK in 1972 to 1979.
Spoke on phone, he rang me at the office one day too.
Caddied for Nathaniel. Met Harry and also Kathryn. Kathryn rang me when I was in Vegas.
Met nephew Howard and a couple of his aunts as well as wife.Met Lindsay’s son Kevin.
So, one very fortunate Australian.
Think I’ve covered everything and hope you enjoy.
Stay safe.
Ron

Different movie, different character.
Dottie was always good value but I liked Jane and Coleen and Grace and Joan Bennett and Joan Blondell.

I’m an 88 year oldAussie and became interested in Bing whenI was about 8-10. I would write to him and other film stars. Most sent postcard size photo  but Bing would send a letter telling a photo was coming under seperate cover and in the letter spoke of his latest film. Photo duly arrived a couple of days later - a 10”x8” b & w. Wrote often and the postie would tell me - a photo from Bing.
I got lucky and met him within a week of arriving in North America - Vancouver and met in Seattle. Met him a few times after that. Also got to meet a few of his family.
I did present a show on Community Radio called Mainly Bing.
Saw him at the Palladium and big thrill when he rang me at work.
Just an ordinary man with a great talent.
Too bad he didn’t make Australia but it was on his agenda for 1978.
There was a Yank that brought stars to Australia and performed at the Sydney Boxing Stadium.
Judy Garland, Johnny Ray, Louis Armstrong (with Gary), Betty Hutton, Frank Sinatra, Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa and others. This was in the 1950’s and sit in the bleachers for about 50 cents. Bob Hope was another. The Stadium held 2 to 3 times or more the audience that the largest Sydney theatre could hold. Boxing was on Monday nights

Depends on the part being played.
That one take in the lift with Jane Wyman ‘In the cool cool cool of the evening’ is a hard one to beat.

In both HI and WC, Bing was being used. As stated Fred was ‘a rat’ and Danny was a bludger.
Bing was a bit like that in some movies but in a nicer way.
WC is not one of my favourite films but it gets a run every year for 2 or 3 showings so I guess we should be grateful for that but would like to see HI get more TV time.
Merry Christmas to all and stay safe during these trying times.
Will be a warm one in Aussie land with some thunder and lightning (must play Strauss)

As Bing sings - At MyTime of Life - (87) who do I leave all my CD’s etc to? My brother certainly isn’t interested and my nephews and nieces aren’t or their children. A visit to the local Council library is on the agenda.

And it was during the filming that Bing won the Totem Pole Golf Tournament at Jasper Park Lodge.
Have you seen the photo of Bing and the black bear outside the Pro shop.
Inside the Lodge there are a couple of photos of Bing on display.
I believe Bing promised his caddy a new suit for any birdies that he had. Think he had to buy two new suits. He birdied the 18th when he was very close to a tree at the back of the green.

I seem to remember that Bing had a bit of a cold and didn’t wish to record ‘I Wished...’ as he thought his voice wasn’t the best at that moment.

Some songs were sung better by a singer than others or I preferred a song by a singer.
There are some songs byDick Haymes that I prefer, or Tony Martin pumped out a couple that I like etc.
Some songs just suited one singer over another.

Oh, what a task!
Pushing about 6,000 song titles sung over the years, but I like  - Down By the River, The Touch of Your Lips,  Lovely Lady and depends on one’s ‘mood’.
Mississippi is a favourite film plus a couple of others.
Been a fan for about 77 years or so (I’m 87).
Had the pleasure of meeting Bing, Bob and Larry in 1957.
Then other members of the Crosby family including Phil when he was in Sydney and caddied for Nathaniel.
Spoke to Bing on the phone a couple of times and he even rang me at the office when I worked in London.
A hard task in deed.

Betty Hutton it was, Graham.
In lockdown in a hotel at Railway Square.
My fortnight is up on Sunday.
Full board for the 14 days at $1500pw.
Last Saturday new linen etc etc left at door so I had to strip and make the bed - not as good as the staff but the sheets are too big for my bed.
Meals are left at the door 3 times a day and you leave the returns outside the door.
Had a swab test last Friday and another on Friday.
On checkout on Sunday further testing, I believe.
My view from the 10th. Floor overlooks Railway Square andI can seethe platform roofs of Central Station. View north so sun all day.
Just as well I had a long book to read on the Royals.
I wonder what fresh air is like.

Riding High is a favourite of mine.
Wish TCM would show it.
Also wish TCM would show Bing films as one gets sick of the constant Wayne movies and forever reruns of other movies but no Bing.
