Dear all,

For ten years now every December, Malcolm Macfarlane and I have been hosting a yearly Bing Crosby podcast on YouTube in which we discuss different aspects of Bing's life and career. This year's podcast features Malcolm and myself, joined by Jason Liddiard and Ken Crossland, and presents a discussion of Bing's recordings from the 1960s. It will premiere on Sunday, December 14, at the following time:

UK Time - 8:00 p.m.
US Time (Eastern) - 3:00 p.m.
US Time (Central) - 2:00 p.m.

You may access the premiere by clicking on the following link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FINS-yDft0s

After the premiere, you can still watch the entire podcast at any time by clicking on that same link.

We hope you enjoy it and wish everyone a happy, Bing-filled holiday season!

Carmela, they aren't as good as the one that Jason was wearing, but I have seen some White Christmas-related T-shirts on Amazon.

Dear all,

It was a very fun Christmas meeting last night, with some great music, interesting interactions between attendees, and a very good presentation by Greg. Oh, and Jason was a great host, as usual! The recording of the meeting is already available here:

I agree, Pantelis, and in fact, I would go so far as to say that hearing Bing talk on those CBS radio shows from the 1950s is almost as much of a treat as listening to him sing with the Buddy Cole combo.

Dear all,

I am not sure if this has been posted to the forum before (possibly so), but I recently found out that the Internet Archive has this impressive collection of Bing Crosby radio shows, most of them with really good sound. In case you weren't aware of this (I wasn't until recently), here's the link:

Doris Day actually didn't record "Sentimental Journey" until several sessions into her tenure with Brown's Band of Renown. Anyone who is interested in this early era of her recording career (which is my favorite, though I do enjoy her later concept albums such as Day by Day and Day by Night, as well as her duet album with Andre Previn) should check out this excellent two-CD set from Collector's Choice, which includes her complete cuts with Les Brown: https://www.amazon.com/Complete-Doris-Day-Brown/dp/B000003961/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2JNROOS12ABOA&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.PqxtiNOwMwyOjtvu8H4Pn5_VYrBGk9NIKGxyOyvPstjd3ksrELxnbUE_OA6J1aNcGokaF4cu_hQILQlw5B4wu1fi3ZQ4ne7vyvZ62368f1IZEuUxQdHBhQQTiTaQ42lyEN2x6SL7ZVAEiFR-a5cafUgCcbvuXDVlRr9GYymf31hRIMEUzsjrunvam4iMliOVbeLB6UgL3SIPgpUYNSPR_EC3im7g9gst7qsC69pCieI._NjfVKuXZnFgRM3-qtUkCFz_BDsHyzib4l3phREEkH0&dib_tag=se&keywords=doris+day+les+brown&qid=1763261846&s=music&sprefix=doris+day+les+brown%2Cpopular%2C125&sr=1-1

The 2-CD set on Acrobat is definitely the way to go to get a proper introduction to Bob Crosby's music because it does deliver on the promise of its title: All the Hits and More, and it covers the 30s, 40s, and even some early '50s recordings. The sound is also good, and the price is another great reason to buy it.

That being said, I love Mosaic sets, though I only have about 6 or 7 because of their hefty price tag. One of them is, of course, Bing's CBS radio box set, but I also have others by Woody Herman, Jack Teagarden, Bobby Hackett, Ike Quebec, Duke Ellington on Reprise (this one is truly great), and the complete jazz recordings issued by the Bee Hive label in the '70s and '80s. All of them highly recommended if you can find a copy at a decent price.

I agree with your assessment of Francis, Stepo, and yet, songs such as "Stupid Cupid" and "Lipstick on Your Collar" were rock hits in the fifties. There is no doubt, however, that Francis wasn't as much of a rocker as the great Wanda Jackson, who also would have a career in country music in the sixties and seventies.

Francis was an interesting singer who felt comfortable in different musical settings and who had a respectable number of hits, some of them during the early years of rock'n'roll, which is one of the reasons why I don't understand why she hasn't been inducted into that musical style's Hall of Fame. Requescat in pace.

P.S.: It's incredible how things play out sometimes in unexpected ways. In the past few months, a recording Francis didn't even remember making, the B side "Pretty Little Baby," has become viral on social media because countless influencers used the song and sampled it. Francis, who wasn't aware of what "becoming viral" means, was with us long enough to realize that much younger generations on social media really enjoy her old song. I'm sure she must've been surprised and delighted!

I like Buddy Cole, particularly when he plays the piano. As an organist, he just doesn't sound as good. Yet in any case, I believe he really understood Bing and accompanied him very well. Anyone that enjoys New Tricks should look for the Mosaic set with all the CBS radio recordings. It's one of my favorite Bing sets ever, because I've always believed that a small-group jazz setting works very well for Bing.

To anyone on here who hasn't partaken in these monthly meetings, should time zones allow (or even if they don't) come on aboard. They are incredibly fun and enjoyable (and would be even more so to one and all if only Jason would just mute my microphone) and there's also so much learn and discuss.

Yes, Ian, this whole online meeting thing is Jason's brainchild, and he should be applauded for all the work that he puts in every month to make them happen. Without Jason, these meetings wouldn't be possible. All I do is prepare the recordings of the meetings to be posted to YouTube, but (except for the cases when there are copyright issues) that doesn't require much work or time. In any case, I am delighted to see how successful these monthly online meetings are, and I hope we keep having them for a very long time. Thanks for your participation, and see you in September, Ian!

Dear all,

The July 2025 ICC online meeting is now available on this link:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHIR914BWAc

Unfortunately, due to copyright reasons, the YouTube algorithm has forced me to eliminate four of the songs, probably because we used film clips instead of simply the sound recordings. I apologize for that, but in the description of the video I have included links to YouTube videos that contain those four songs. That way everyone can at least listen to them by clicking on the links.

Great choices everyone! This was an excellent meeting! Please remember that we take a brief summer break from the online meetings in August but will be resuming the meetings again in September.

Thanks, as always, to Jason for hosting and putting the meetings together!

I also like traditional country music, and for several years I hosted a traditional country music radio show on station WRVU in Nashville. I also rate Bing Sings the Great Country Hits very highly among his late-career albums, even if reportedly he was suffering from a cold while he recorded it.

Stepo, I absolutely agree: those are two very good CDs to give a listen to Bing's contribution to the popularization of country music in the 1930s and '40s. Not only do they offer studio recordings, but also live cuts from his radio appearances, which was another very important way in which Bing showcased some of these country songs during his heyday as a radio star. Both volumes are very recommendable, and the sound is very good.

Thank you, Pantelis and Carmela! I am glad that you both enjoyed the presentation, and I had a great time preparing it and delivering it. My intention is to turn it into an article for BING Magazine at some point. I am also planning to do a similar presentation on Bing and Latin American music for the next season of online meetings that will start in September after our usual break in August.

Best wishes to both of you. Have a great summer!

Dear all,

During the online ICC meeting for June, it was my pleasure to do an hour-long presentation on Bing Crosby's contributions to country music, illustrated by a number of recordings made between the thirties and the seventies. Yesterday I took the recording of that presentation, which is part of the meeting, and turned it into a separate video that only includes the presentation and the music in an audio-only format. If you're interested in listening to it, here's the link:

Yes, Bing and Fred Allen did appear on radio together many, many times over the years. Here are two examples:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kn0dc77VflU

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w7mENsFdTdM&t

And I do agree that Fred Allen was much better suited to the medium of radio than to that of television, though he often did a great job as panelist on the famous game show What's My Line?, hosted by one of the most soft-spoken American TV hosts of all time, Mr. John Charles Daly.
