There seems to be the first major step by Primary Wave to promote Bing, with this new Christmas In July thing the Bing account has been posting.

Recording » A Musical Autobiography » 09/6/2022 2:40 am

It was through streaming on things like Spotify or Apple, sorry for not specifying. I just haven’t been in much of a Bing mood lately, however I’ve still been keeping up as best as I could!

Recording » A Musical Autobiography » 08/6/2022 10:48 pm

I quite like the re-recordings on the album, and I know most of you have the sets from SEPIA containing the re-recordings, but I just discovered something nice. UMe put the full Musical Autobiography up for purchase and streaming in the US!

Radio » What is your favorite Bing Crosby radio show? » 14/2/2022 6:46 am

I had to choose General Electric solely for the musical material in it. The other shows are more entertaining dialogue wise, but the material Bing does in the General Electric shows I always look for to.

Film » DECEMBER MOVIE OF THE MONTH - Holiday Inn » 02/12/2021 7:26 am

I just rewatched this movie, and it’s always a joy watching this. I watched both this and White Christmas today and it got me into the holiday mood.

Recording » Looks Like A Cold, Cold Winter » 02/12/2021 7:25 am

I also really like “The First Snowfall,” “That Christmas Feeling,” “Sleigh Bell Serenade,” and “Little Jack Frost Get Lost” from around this time.

Recording » Bing Argues With Jack Kapp » 07/11/2021 4:03 am

He apparently had something against the person who published the song by the time he was scheduled to record it, at least going off of the argument.

Recording » "Thoroughly Modern Bing" » 07/11/2021 12:36 am

I am currently revisiting this album, and it is sad with the lack of "Where The Rainbow Ends" on most CD releases. I think it is the best track recorded for the album, unless maybe the one track that has never been issued.

Oh I've known about Lux Radio Theatre, I didn't realize you were meaning that, but it also makes more sense why Ann Blyth would be doing it since co-stars, or even stars would have be replaced on those shows, not all of them of course, but still. I'll have to allocate more time for this broadcast now haha.  I hope it is more enjoyable than Bing and Blyth's movie together "Top O' The Mornin'" which I am not particularly fond of, although it has it's moments.

Radio » Bing Crosby In The Thirties (JSP LP Releases) » 06/11/2021 7:55 pm

I've been listening to the 3LP that JSP released in the 80s of Bing's earlier KMH performances, and they're great, good quality too. I understand they released a CD of these recordings in a set with Bing radio performances with Judy Garland and Jimmy Durante which I am keeping an eye out for.

Anyone have thoughts on these JSP LPs/CDs? Like I said I quite like them.

Radio » Radio Version - I'm Yours » 06/11/2021 7:48 pm

Oh I just found this post now, I had acquired the CBS Radio set in September and I really loved this song, that set is a landfill of great recordings!

Boy it's nice to see Bing's great Christmas songs finally represented in a video format.   I've really liked every one I've seen except that awful Wokeified White Christmas video.  They sure ruined a perfect opportunity to turn Bing's signature Christmas song into a thing of beauty instead of an overboard politically correct piece of nonsense.   I hope they scrap that one and re-do White Christmas again this time doing it right, maybe even with my favorite version of Bing's White Christmas the 1955 recording made for the Christmas Eve "Around The World" broadcasts.   But all of the rest have been really nice.

I am actually fine with the White Christmas one outside of some of the elements, although you ever notice in that animation that the hand positions and mouth positions of Bing seem tailored for a pipe? Personally the "The Little Drummer Boy" one is somewhat disappointing to me in some aspects, as it doesn't really fit the song too much in my opinion, however the different references to Bing in it are unrivaled by any of the other animations.

I'll have to take a listen, it is quite a good song.

During Bing's recording session of August 14, 1935 - he was being forced to record I Wished On The Moon. Bing had a grievance with the song's publisher representative Lou Diamond and only wanted to sing one chorus. This fight went on for nearly 4 minutes. Bing got his way, and by the time he did record I Wished On The Moon it sounded like he wanted no part in the song...

It also sounded like Bing was a little tipsy - reported the Dorsey Brothers had a liquid lunch that day!

This one, which I had thankfully to one of my few (physical) volumes of the Jonzo series, got a companion in my collection when I discovered the Melancholie rehearsal that was on the Just For Fun Take Two album. His blow up at the end is quite a fun one, although a bit vulgar haha.

Swaps and Sales » Anyone Have Any Bing Crosby Wants? » 04/11/2021 12:21 am

The main thing that I am after at the moment are the The Crosby Collection (I believe that's the title) books by Fred Reynolds, which even if someone just had a PDF copy, I would be eternally grateful. I have always enjoyed the Jonzo/Sepia notes that talk about and compare takes on songs, and those books look right up my alley.

I dug up another version of the Bing song "The Second Time Around" which Bing introduced in the 1960 film "High Time". Steve recorded this decent version in 1961...

Hoo boy, add this to the list of the versions I like more than Sinatra's. Frank's version has never done much for me in comparison to the many other versions I've listened too.

I feel what is lacking in the movie is chemistry between Joan Fontaine and Bing. They did not seem to mesh well.

At least with the movie's I've seen her in, she hasn't had too great of chemistry. Part of it is, I think, is that her characters' continuously estrange themselves from the stars.

I also think part of it is that, the mood on the set wasn't the greatest, as there had been stories, I am not sure of the truth of them, that it wasn't the best behind scenes with Bing and Billy Wilder. Apparently though Joan Fontaine's appearance on Bing's TV they had much better chemistry.

Film » NOVEMBER MOVIE OF THE MONTH: The Emperor Waltz » 19/10/2021 7:01 pm

I think it works in the context of this movie, but it weren’t for the context I don’t think it would work nearly as well.

I don't know if it wass intentional or not, but it feels like Bing's character was turned up to 11 on the usual persona. For example, Blue Skies' Bing, while featuring all of the traits of Bing's character here, is a much more mellow character. Whether this was intentional or not, I think it definitely makes me like it more with just how expressive he is in this.

Rosemary became one of my favorite female singers, so that definitely helps those records for me as well.

Like Jeremy said, I can only restate everyone's thoughts here. Thank you Richard, you were a shining light in my earl days of getting into Bing, and will never forget you for the help you gave me. I think David will do great running this forum, he's already been posting and getting the conversation started here. It'll be nice to see this active after the loss of a mostly active forum earlier this year with the Sinatra family forum, and with Bing not really being the most popular subject on other music forums.

Recording » Bing & Satchmo (1960 album) » 16/10/2021 3:29 am

I like this album a lot, but it is second to last place when ranking Bing's duets albums for me. I simply adore the Bing and Fred duet album from 1975, along with the Fancy Meeting You Here, then this album, and last the That Travelin' Two Beat album. All of them I enjoy though.

Film » Movie Of A Month Club » 16/10/2021 3:23 am

I quite like The Emperor Waltz, it's one of my favorite Bing movies for no particular reason, but I really enjoy it.

Artistic Legacy » Bing Crosby Estate Sells Estate Rights » 12/10/2021 3:18 am

I doubt the TV series will release, although it wouldn't surprise me if more of Bing's catalog is put on streaming, with maybe some new CD releases. I'm just going off the track record of Primary Wave's Olivia Newton John reissues.
