"After the rip-roaring ‘Rollin’ and Tumblin”, Dylan resumes his mellifluous country tones in ‘When the Deal Goes Down’. The track is based on the melody of Bing Crosby’s ‘Where the Blue of the Night (Meets the Gold of the Day)’ and, as such, was a source of controversy upon the album’s arrival. Although Dylan’s ballad contained his original lyrics, he was called out by the media in reference to the album’s liner notes, which stated: “All songs written by Bob Dylan”. Several other tracks from the album were included in the debate due to their derivative qualities. Dylan didn’t credit the artists but casually admitted to deriving his melodies from legendary artists. As Pete Seeger once quoted Woody Guthrie as saying while discussing the folk process, “That guy stole that from me, but I steal from everybody.”

I forgot that it was deleted from the film. Thank you!

I just listen to the 1954 intro for "Wait 'Til the Sun Shines, Nellie" He says "I suppose the most successful record I ever made..."

I always liked "Ol' Spring Fever" 1952.

Also "Wait 'Till the Sun Shines, Nellie" with Mary Martin. The intro on this one is interesting, I'm referring to the Musical Autobiography spoken intro. He states that this was one of his most successful records. Giving credit to Mary Martin duetting. I will have to check my copy of Joel Whitburn's Pop Memories 1890 - 1954. I don't think it charted.

Of course success can be determined in many ways.

Bryon G Harlan had a #1 hit with it 1906 based on 1 million sales in sheet music and radio play.

Here is some more Elko news from back in the day.

Mr. and Mrs. Bing Crosby, returning from their ranch in Elko County to Hollywood today, tarried in Carson for lunch at the Senator Coffee Shop.

Well here is a connection I found with Bing Crosby to Staten Island.

It appears to to have taken place in 1932:

"The Stapes pulled another surprise the next week when they took on the Dodgers before 20,000 at Ebbets Field. The fans stirred up when they spotted Bing Crosby among their number, but the Stapletons quieted them down by winning the contest 7-6, despite completing a paltry two passes for the day."  (THE STATEN ISLAND STAPLETONS By John Hogrogian Special thanks to N.F.L. Properties, Inc. for permission to publish this article.)

The Staten Island Stapletons also known as the Staten Island Stapes were a professional American football team founded in 1915 that played in the National Football League from 1929 to 1932. The team was based in the Stapleton section of Staten Island. They played under the shortened nickname the "Stapes" the final two seasons. Jack Shapiro, who was a blocking back for the Stapletons, was the shortest player in NFL history.

Found the answer!

At the bottom of page 30 in Gary Giddins  1st volume on Bing.

Bing's Father was disappointed he did not have a girl so his Mother named him after his Father.

However she chose Lillis as the middle name after a family friend in the neighborhood.

Both Bing and his Father continued to use the Sr. and Jr. designations.

So the Bob Hope film with William Bendix has a Crosby cameo of sorts.

I had forgotten about this until I read a modern review/appreciation of the film.

The whole film is on YouTube. Around 52 mins in Hope on the run with the girl Vera Marshes' character and its pouring rain.....they pass by a large poster of Bing Crosby appearing in Blue Skies. The girl says who's that and Hope replies a singer before your time makes another comment and catches water coming from the down spout and throws it on the poster.

Harry Lowe Crosby

Harry Lillis Crosby Jr.

Harry Lillis Crosby III

So what am I missing here. Bing was named after his Father and passed his name on to his son Harry, but everything I have found shows Lowe was his Father's middle name.

Or were they just going by H.L.C aspect?

I do remember reading that Bing Crosby did propose to her and that the Prince banned the film High Society in Monaco because of it.  There is a tabloid article out there linking her to every leading man expect Jimmy Stewart because Gloria Stewart drove him to the set each day when they were filming Rear Window..

It has been a while since I saw the film. Her character's name was Chorine.

Couldn't get the picture to load but if you google her with Bing there is a still from the movie out there with the two of them.

At the 1950 Bing Crosby National Pro-Am—now AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am—the scheduled 54-hole tournament, using a Friday-to-Sunday format, ended with Burke, Dave Douglas, Smiley Quick and Sam Snead deadlocked, at 2-under 214. With not enough daylight to conduct a sudden-death playoff and players scheduled to travel down the California coast, to Long Beach, the next day for the Long Beach Open, tournament officials declared four champions, each player receiving an official-victory designation. It remains the only time in PGA TOUR history that a tournament has declared four champions.

If you google Ben Piazza as Bing Crosby you can find a side by side picture on-line.

He was also the dad in The Blues Brothers movie in the restaurant scene where they offer to buy his children.

I do recall the 1983 TV movie about Grace Kelly. Actor Ben Piazza played Bing Crosby. The movie is listed on line. I recall his part was brief.
