Others of Note » Other vocalists sing of Bing » 23/5/2021 6:57 am

As we know, the lyrics of many  popular songs include a reference to Bing. I just heard a recording by Al Bowlly which does that but Al interpolated something I'd not heard before: 'direct from Crosby we give it to you' I believe the recording was made in 1940 with Jimmy Messene's orchestra. I wonder what Johnny Burke thought of that.

Others of Note » Rudy Vallee - Please » 13/5/2021 12:16 am

That's an interesting recording. Frank Ifield's recording of 'Please' was a hit in Australia in 1964.It was in the charts for 14 Weeks reaching number 5 spot.

Others of Note » Charlie Spivak - I Surrender Dear » 14/4/2021 7:29 am

I don't think Carlie Spivak's band was well known in Australia although David Kent's Australian Chart Book 1940-1969 credits him with having five Aussie chart hits between 1943 (My Devotion) and 1947 (Linda). I think I remember seeing his name on a photo of the marquee of a US cinema when Going My Way was being screened but perhaps I'm mistaken.

Fan Interests » What I used to think was Bing's only comic » 14/4/2021 7:18 am

Ah, I remember seeing Perils of Pauline starring, I think, Betty Hutton.

Fan Interests » BING COMIC BOOKS! NOW READ EACH PAGE OF RIDING HIGH with Bing! » 14/4/2021 7:16 am

That was an interesting comic. It's years since I saw Riding High and reading the comic reminded me that it was an entertaining film and that there were many interesting products on sale then eg the BB gun.

Recording » Jonzo Series... What happened? » 14/4/2021 6:59 am

Thankfully, I have the complete set of Jonzos among my CD collection and I listen to them chronologically, presently about to start (again) with the General Electric set produced by David. I love 'em.

Television » Bing on the Ed Sullivan show » 19/3/2021 4:30 am

That's a beaut clip. Thanks Greg and Malcolm which reminds me that I tried to find a copy of Nick Perito's book but no library in Australia has a copy.

Artistic Legacy » Bing Crosby Million Sellers updates /more/ » 27/2/2021 1:42 am

Australians who wish to learn the sales of records when we bought those 78 rpm shellac discs are fortunate. For most of the 1930s and 1940s EMI affiliates dominated the record industry with production by The Columbia Graphophone Company in Sydney. Each month the sales were recorded on small cards. When EMI decided that it no longer wanted to keep those cards they were sent to The National Film and Sound Archive in Canberra. David Kent of Sydney was able to make copies of the cards and kindly allowed me to record the sales of most of Bing's Aussie-made discs.

Others of Note » Matt Monro - Small Fry » 15/2/2021 6:18 am

I enjoyed that. He had many hits in Australia in the 1960s, notably 'Born Free'

New and Re-issued materials » Bing in the Getty video archives » 15/2/2021 6:08 am

Wow! That's quite a collection isn't it.

Film » Unknown Rhythm Boys film song discovered » 15/2/2021 6:03 am

Thanks Malcolm. The actor looked familiar. And thanks for the Gonzaga presentation on 'White Christmas'.

Artistic Legacy » More Bing Magazines Added » 13/12/2020 3:52 am

That's amazing! Thank you Jon.

Television » Bob Hope interview » 13/12/2020 3:42 am

I enjoyed that. That confected rivalry between Bing and Bob was so entertaining and provided such scope for publicity in an era when it worked. Would it work today?

Film » Radio Times picks "High Society" as "Film of the Week" » 13/12/2020 3:15 am

High Society is one of my favourite films and not just Crosby films. It's great entertainment. I've seen The Philadelphia Story only once, many years ago on TV, and I believe the musical 'version' is much more entertaining.

Recording » Favorite Bing Crosby Christmas Songs » 13/12/2020 3:11 am

It's difficult to separate the song from the singer but I'd say:
1. White Christmas
2. Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas
3. Adeste Fideles
4. It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas
5. Silent Night

Having just watched all of the single song videos, I believe they are cute but do not really enhance the splendid recordings of the fine songs.

Recording » The Essential & Underrated Bing Crosby » 21/10/2020 3:55 am

That's a beaut selection. Coincidentally, I opened my radio program on Monday with 'A Couple of Song and Dance Men' and when I addressed a local Probus Club last week I played Bing and Bob singing 'Put It There Pal' with great lyrics (which i introduced by explaining some of the supposed ad libs such as 'great for selling cheese' and 'Colonna's big moustache'.

Swaps and Sales » Bing's Pipe from Bing Crosby Estate Sale 1982 (Estate Catalogue) » 21/10/2020 3:48 am

The Australian radio and TV personality Bert Newton had someone bid for him at the auction and bought one of Bing's pipes and, more significantly, the plaque which Australia's wartime Prime Minister John Curtain had awarded Bing in recognition of his help in Australia's Victory Loan.

Others of Note » Phil Crosby Sings Bing! » 26/9/2020 2:15 am

Ron I remember the Total brand. I believe a friend of mine named Peter Engelman worked for Total, probably in its Sydney office in the late 1960s.

Others of Note » Gary Crosby Sings Bing! » 26/9/2020 2:10 am

Gary could sing in tune but these three examples suggest that he relied on the Crosby name to achieve whatever success he had as a vocalist. I wonder why he chose to record 'Blue Prelude', an undistinguished song which must have been difficult for any vocalist to do much with.
