Recording » Bing's beautiful 1938 ballads » 24/7/2019 8:58 am

Hey there all!

As I mentioned previously, I've been listening through *most of* Bing's recorded works starting from around 1931, and on Monday I hit 1938 and was blown away by four particular ballads that just floored me:

So for me, as much as I love rhythm/swing numbers, I have aways adored a gorgeous ballad with a moving string arrangement. To come across these tracks, with Bing singing so beautifully and sincerely, and those perfect arrangements backing him just knocked me out. I hope there's plenty more of this to come!

I've noticed a vast improvement in the arranging of the songs in particular right around this point and I can't wait to keep going! I just wanted to share how much of an impact these particular recordings had on me and wondered if they had the same impact on others!

Thanks everyone for the tips! I'll be keeping an eye out for the Harry Lillis CD...hopefully one will show up someday haha! I've found several great listings for the LP box set as well

Some good news, thanks to some asking around I found someone who was able to provide me an mp3 version of the 36 tracks, and I LOVE THEM. Big, lush orchestral arrangements and strings are some of my favorite backings, and these sound great with Bing. I had been hoping to someday find some recordings of ballads, etc. where he has just this type of orchestral backing and I'm so glad to hear these. Bing may sound a bit thin here and there but there is true gold on these tracks. I do think they could've been mixed a bit better, the orchestra has some nice natural reverb but Bing's voice is pretty dry and noticeably sits on top. Could've used a little reverberation, I think this dryness of the vocal tracks may contribute to the slight thin sound of his voice at times.

At any rate, getting to listen to these was an immense delight and will definitely speed up the process of buying the LP 100%!

Thanks so much for the tip. I'm searching all over the place to find this CD though and I'm having absolutely no luck...really frustrating. Any ideas on where to look or people who may have extra copies? I wish these were available digitally!

Hey everyone!

Today I discovered some of the recordings Bing made with the Longines Symphonette backings for the 1968 "The Songs I Love" box set, and they sound absolutely beautiful! I love the gorgeous string backing on some of them, its a setting that I've wanted to hear Bing in more than I have.

However, I've been searching online for some way to find the rest and outside of buying the vinyl boxset itself, I can't seem to find any other options. I'm not opposed to buying the box necessarily, but I'm really just interested in the Bing-vocal material. And my equipment isn't good enough to make a proper, high quality vinyl transfer to listen to digitally.

I'm not sure how asking for things like this is viewed on here but...is there anyone here who might be able to point me in the direction of a way to find the 36 vocal sides recorded for this project? Digitally, CD, mp3 files, anything? It would be very much appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi there all!

I'm very pleased to be joining this group and getting to discuss and read more about Bing Crosby as I continue to discover him more. My name is Brady, I'm 23 from the USA and have been listening thru my recently acquired Bing Crosby collections nonstop these past few weeks.

I became a true fan of the jazz/traditional pop genre in 2012 with my introduction to Sammy Davis Jr. From there, when I wasn't obsessively listening to or collecting anything and everything that Sammy did, I would find and listen to other singers from the genre, and within several years my knowledge and palette for this genre grew extensively. I have collected and listened to the likes of Nat King Cole, Mel Tormé, Bobby Darin, Ella Fitzgerald, Al Jolson, Tony Bennett (whom I've had the good fortune to see twice in concert), and of course Mr. Sinatra. With all these guys my vinyl collection currently reaches 550+ pieces!

The only missing "link" so to speak was Bing Crosby. Its impossible not to be at least aware of Bing, of course, so naturally I had done some research and listened to bits and pieces, downloaded the occasional album here/there. But for some reason he didn't grab my interest just yet. I liked him naturally, but didn't -adore- him the way I seemed to with everyone else. So I decided to leave Bing on the back burner for when the time came that I'd be ready to fully appreciate and immerse myself.

Well thank goodness that time finally came! I dove headfirst into all things Bing thanks to some help finding the complete Jonzo and Sepia Decca series online, as well as the 50s albums, the CBS Radio recordings, and most of the 1970s albums. I'm just loving it. His laid-back style is so relaxing and calming. I've especially been adoring listening to the Buddy Cole Trio recordings off the Mosaic set, the 1950s Bing was perfect with a jazz-combo and I wish he would've made more albums exploring this sound! But...ugh...that organ...oh well haha.

Anyway I'm so glad I'm final
