Forthcoming auction

Just had this letter.

DUBLIN
AUCTION OF UNPUBLISHED BING CROSBY GOLFING PHOTOGRAPHS

Whyte’s Auctioneers, Dublin, will auction previously unpublished photographs of Bing Crosby playing golf - and playing to the gallery - in Ireland in 1961.

The six pictures taken at Woodbrook Golf Club near Dublin, show Crosby’s initial displeasure and then enjoyable antics after his ball lands in very rough ground. The sixth photo shows his skilled escape, with the camera catching the ball in the air. Among the very few action photographs of the event, they will be presented in a frame about four feet wide with captions at Whyte’s “Eclectic Collector” auction on May 14th, 2016.

The occasion was a charity match watched by more than 4,000 spectators on Sunday, September 17th, 1961. I was the photographer and was allowed stand within a few feet of Crosby (without a telephoto).  Crosby’s partner was Harry Bradshaw, Irish champion. They played the US ambassador to Ireland Grant Stockdale and another Irish professional Christy Greene. The game, in aid of the Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, was declared “a tie”; Lady Killanin, the society’s president, presented Waterford Glass and Irish whiskey to all four players.

From the clubhouse balcony, Crosby sang When Irish Eyes Are Smiling, Galway Bay and White Christmas. It was the first of several visits by Crosby to Ireland.

Whyte’s, at 38 Molesworth Street, Dublin 2, Ireland, can be contacted at: info@whytes.ie or 00353 1 6762888. Whyte's will be putting a catalogue, including pictures of the framed set of photographs, on its website in mid April: whytes.ie or whytes.com

Regards,
