Alistair Cooke and Bing

A nice surprise this morning when I logged in to my computer home-page...

www.bbc.co.uk/news/ contains a link to three brief extracts from Alistair Cooke's iconic "Letter From America" series of broadcasts. The first of these consists of a few thought about Bing -along with a slide-show of photos, mainly set and publicity shots from "Road To Hong Kong" -followed by similar appreciations of Louis Armstrong and Charlie Chaplin, who was best man at Cooke's wedding.

As I say, they are only brief, but it was very gratifying to see Bing featured on the main BBC home page.

Alistair Cooke's ''Letters From America'' covered every possible topic. Bing sang ''There's Nothing I Haven't Sung About'' but Alistair Cooke could have claimed there was nothing he hadn't written about. He continued until 2004 and there are items going back to 1947 in the archive, though he started in 1946.
I think this might be a more permanent link to the item that Jeremy mentions, http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-20151035
and a list of the full archive is here http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00f6hbp

I know that some parts of the BBC internet  site have restrictions on access from outside the UK so I hope these work internationally.

Re: Alistair Cooke and Bing

Very good and some great photos of Bing that I've never seen before. However, he is saying that Bing called out - say Bingo if you hear dialogue you know. I've heard several times that it was Dottie that said that very early on, or am I mistaken?

Re: Alistair Cooke and Bing

In the wee small hours (about 2.00am) this morning I realised I made an error on the above comment.
I think Dottie asked if she could get her lines in and it was either Bing or Bob that asked that the director call bingo. Sorry for the error.
