New Rosemary Clooney Mosaic set

Bing's long term singing partner Rosemary Clooney has a new 5 CD set coming out on Mosaic, covering many, possibly even all, of the solo tracks recorded in the 1950s and early 60s for her radio programmes with Bing "The Ford Road Show" and the "Crosby -Clooney Show" as well as a number of songs recorded for her own show "The Rosemary Clooney Show".

In other words, very strong Bing connections, not just because of her association with Bing but because so many of the songs are direct from Bing's radio shows.

The set is produced by Robert Bader of Bing Crosby Enterprises, and is in may respects similar to the Bing's 7 CD Mosaic set that was so favourably reviewed on it's issue.

Buddy Cole and his small group accompany throughout.
A full track listing is here   http://www.mosaicrecords.com/discography.asp?number=258-MD-CD&price=$85.00&copies=5

and more details plus five complete tracks are available to sample here

It is a limited edition of 5000 sets for $85.

On the basis of the samples and the precedent of the set from Bing, the sound will be good.

I have just one complaint. The Buddy Cole group (Cole himself on piano, celeste and harpsichord,  Vince Terri – guitar, Don Whitaker - bass, and Nick Fatool – drums & percussion) was a very satisfactory close knit group which produced marvellous support. We know how well this worked with Bing, and already have many examples with Bing and Rosemary in duet. But as with Bing's set, Cole could not resist over-embellishing things with his occasional additional organ accompaniment. I'm afraid I have a deep seated dislike of the overall effect. Just occasionally, in quieter, slower numbers, some additional musical support might be called for beyond the dominant rhythms of the group. This might have been achieved by judicious use of some strings, but not that wretched organ attempting to substitute for a similar effect. The results are evident even from the samples. But I realise others will not agree.

I'm delighted and look forward to hearing the set but I think I'll get out the earplugs for possible use on some tracks!

Re: New Rosemary Clooney Mosaic set

Richard,

This new Clooney box set sounds like something I need to get! Perhaps I need to have a little talk with Santa before Christmas rolls around...

Here's a review of the set by noted Wall Street Journal jazz critic, Marc Myers:

See what you think!

Re: New Rosemary Clooney Mosaic set

To be honest, the set sounds nice but I'll probably pass on it because of Buddy Cole.

Not a fan orchestrations for Rosie or Bing for that matter. I never bought the Bing Crosby box set either.

Re: New Rosemary Clooney Mosaic set

With the set, plus the earlier Mosaic set of Bing, plus the Bing and Rosie duet set, you can very nearly recreate the sequence of Bing's broadcasts for CBS with Rosie sans linking dialogue!
