"Billboard" 70 years ago

Jan. 8, 1944 saw the introduction of "Billboard's Hot Country Songs", then called  "Most Played Juke Box Folk Records", and topping it was Bing Crosby and the Andrews Sisters with  "Pistol Packin' Mama".

Re: "Billboard" 70 years ago

'Pistol packin Mama' is one of the earliest Crosby recordings I remember listening to as a 10-year old in Melbourne, Australia. According to David Kent's AUSTRALIAN CHART BOOK 1940-1969 it reached the top of the Aussie charts that year and he ranked it as the ninth-top song of the year. 'You'll never know' (Vera Lynn; Joe Loss) was top song and 'Sunday, Monday or always' (Bing and Frank Sinatra) was second-top.
