Dick Haymes, a great crooner in his own right, would have turned 100 this year. I was looking through radio remotes of his, and I discovered his version of the Bing standard Empty Saddles from 1950. I am always interested in hearing covers of Bing's songs so I thought you all might be interested. Dick Haymes is backed by Victor Young, who also worked with Bing...

I was digging through some Bing material that I don't always play, and I am amazed at how many recordings Bing made from the Great American Songbook in 1947... some good stuff I am rediscovering:

Sadly another associate of Bing's has passed away. Child star Gloria Jean passed away. She starred with Bing in If I Had My Way...

I interviewed Mary Carlisle in the mid 1990s for an article in Club Crosby and she only had good things to say about Bing. I'll have to dig it out.

Mary Carlisle was one of Bing's most beautiful early leading ladies:

I am sorry to have to report but Wayne Martin has died. He was the vice-president of Club Crosby and editor of BINGANG until the club merged with the ICC in 2003.

He will be missed...

Like his old man though Frank Jr was a miserable man at times

Nancy Sr remained devoted to Ole Blue Eyes for a long time! She outlived Sinatra by 20 years!

I like to dwell on the positive facets of Bing's films, but I have to admit that Bing did make a few clinkers (not many in his career). So - what is your least favorite Bing film?

My choice hands down is Say One For Me (1959). Bing should not have made this movie - the music is good but the plot and acting is just horrible. Bing deserved better!

I'd like to see Top o' The Moanin' & Mr. Music released.   Dixie's in color so I'd like to see that one as 3rd choice.  Do you think this will make a shred of difference to those in charge of releasing these things?   Thank goodness for DVD recorders & bootlegs.

Nope, not a shred of a difference at all. I'm just curious what movie everyone would like to see. I have them all on bootleg DVDs already.

I haven't seen a new classic movie colorized since Holiday Inn. Is there a market these days for that?

Good job guys, I'd have been happy to make it easy on them and told them not to bother re-releasing all the stuff already released and stick to releasing the MANY Bing shows NOT released yet.   I'm extremely pleased though to see Bing's 50th Anniversery CBS special being released!   This alone is a reason to celebrate.  Now, I wonder will there be an ending of this show or will it just stop near the end as my home brewed copy does.   This is the show, so I've heard, where Bing fell off the stage, but I still can't imagine CBS would broadcast this with the end just abruptly cut off, at least they would have put a still of Bing with credits roling, my version just ends, no good bye closing.

So many good Bing TV things that the Bing people COULD be doing instead of taking another decades long nap.  Maybe they're part bear and need to hibernate in between releases.  How about the Hollywood Palace Bing shows, & I'd love to see the COMPLETE Bing Sitcom show released, all episodes & COLORIZED would be a 1000 times better.  So many good choices so many reasons to be frustrated over the fact that NOTHING is being done about it.

I agree with you Lee. Unfortunately the market for Bing Crosby in 2018 is not what is was in 1977 or even 1989. Bing is just not a money maker anymore. Too much time has passed. I hate to sound negative but it's a Monday. LOL. I will always support Bing but there needs to be a lot of of an audience out there than just a few of us for them to reissue the good treasures at this point.

I agree with you Lee.

The decades between books has made me concerned. I think in the old days anyone would have bought a book on Bing, but with his original fan base dying off, I think the book's sales will be limited to be devoted fans and maybe academics. I am worried that the sale of volume 2 could hurt the chances for a volume 3.

I am really interested in the later part of Bing's career as well.

Hi Lee!

What movies do you feel would benefit from color? Do you think it is too expensive for the companies now to colorize the old movies? (Since DVD sales are flat these days)

Of Bing's movies I would love to see The Star Maker colorized and what is an Irish movie like Top O The Morning without being able to see the green!

Which Bing Crosby film would you like to see released on DVD? (I know Dixie was released in England at some point, but it hasn't been in the US). I have bootleg copies of all of Bing's movies but I would love to see these movies commerically released...

I rewatched the colorized version of Holiday Inn this past weekend, and it is remarkable how great the movie looks in color. Why has colorization kind of disappeared now. You don't hear or see many old movies/tv shows being colorized these days. This is a question for old friend Lee.

Where is he?
