A copyright block has prevented this Aussie from watching your video. Pity!

Recording » Brainwashing! » 12/4/2018 6:32 am

It's often difficult to separate the quality of the performance and the quality of the song in an exercise such as this. I'd be inclined to include Bing's recordings of 'Gigi', 'Thank you for a lovely evening'and 'Style' from the second half of his career.

What an interesting selection. FANCY MEETING YOU HERE would be at the top of my album list and I enjoy BING SINGS WHILE BREGMAN SWINGS. As for SEASONS, I reckon it's a beauty.

Thanks Anton. I've read the first three Friedwall books you described and agree that they are excellent: informative and very readable.

On the subject of dancing, on my weekly radio program this morning I played Fred Astaire's version of  'I won't dance'. I wonder if Bing sang it.

Film » "King Of Jazz" to be screened at The London Film Festival » 12/3/2018 3:22 am

The film was screened at  Sydney cinema last year and it was a treat, not just because of Bing but as an historic piece of cinema.

Recording » Underrated Recordings of 1946 » 12/3/2018 3:13 am

Thanks for those selections. For Australian Crosby fans, 1946 was a very good year. Twenty of his records were released and 33 of the songs became hits, although most had been recorded in previous years. In 1946, radio stations in Melbourne, Australia's second-biggest city, programmed more than five hours of programs each week which played on Crosby records. Surprisingly, when one station invited its listeners to select their own programs of recorded music, Bing was second to Richard Tauber.

That's great news Malcolm.

Quite apartt from the connection with Bing, it's a treat to see great old songs performed by contemporary artistes and to see people dance the way we used to dance. Thanks Frans for those two shows.

Others of Note » Phil Harris 45rpm » 08/2/2018 7:17 am

David, as a fan of Phil Harris you probably know that in 1927 he played drums in Carol Lofner's orchestra in Australia at the Palais de Danse in Melbourne. The band included American and Australian musicians. Subsequently Harris wrote to the music magazine TEMPO stating 'the year spent in Melbourne playing at the Palais was one of the happiest of my life'.His recording of 'The thing' was a number one hit here.

Bing's first appearance on Australian television was 3 June 1959 in an episode of the Phil Silvers Show (USA 22 January 1957). I was unable to see it unfortunately.

That's another interesting episode David. The only record I'd heard before is Bing's. Suggestions for possible future episodes: Performers whom Bing admired greatly or influenced him in his early years OR artists or songwriters whom Bing assisted or encouraged early in their careers or to boost them after they'd slipped professionally or personally.

Thanks Kevin. I'm in Bathurst Australia where we're having a heat wave as today's temp. is expected to reach 100 degrees but we're doing well in the cricket and Bing helps keep me cool.

Artistic Legacy » Bing Crosby as Christmas Singer: Conversation with Malcolm Macfarlane » 17/12/2017 3:41 am

Thanks Anton and Malcolm for an interesting hour. I believe the only version of 'White Christmas' with the verse which I've heard is one by Richard Tauber. The recording begins with him singing the chorus followed by the verse. I don't know when it was recorded.

Good work Anton. A very appropriate introduction for the movie.

Others of Note » Others Singing Bing » 05/12/2017 5:51 am

I love to discover other singers' recordings of songs I associate with Bing and I've never heard another recording of 'Boo boo boo' before. I wonder who wrote the song (presumably for the movie).
