We'll no doubt get caught for import duty too so bear that in mind when ordering from a USA friend. Incidentally I understand that Robert Bader and Bing Crosby Enterprises deserve our sincere thanks for putting this wonderful set together.

Biography » Gary Giddins - Volume Two » 11/7/2018 5:47 am

The publication date for BING CROSBY: SWINGING ON A STAR: THE WAR YEARS, 1940–1946, the second volume of award-winning critic and scholar Gary Giddins’s eagerly anticipated Bing Crosby biography has been moved to October 30, 2018.

Biography » Gary Giddins - Volume Two » 02/7/2018 6:44 am

I have been sent an advance galley proof and the book is a masterpiece.  Superbly written, the incredibly detailed research is bolstered by access to many personal letters from the war years which have been released by Kathryn Crosby. This book tells us far more about Bing’s tremendous contribution to the war effort than we have ever known before and this was at a time when he was making his most successful films and records. The problems with his marriage and his relationship with Joan Caulfield are considered in depth. It’s a book all of you will want and will find hard to put down. The chapter about Bing's time in France in 1944 in particular is breathtaking!

The book has arrived! It has 76 A5 size pages. There are 19 pages of biography (nice to read so many sentences from my Day by Day book!) and 12 pages of black and white photos. The remainder comprises appendices of chart hits, films, TV appearances etc. Everything in the book is very accurate and it seems that the extensive information on the BING magazine web site and on Wikipedia has been intensively used.  The print is small. No author's name is quoted but I am guessing that it was probably an ICC member as the text reveals some long term knowledge. It reminds me of the Bing Crosby Information File the ICC put out many years ago.

Frank Startup has drawn my attention to a number of small books about Bing on Amazon.  See
https://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=steven+king+crosby

I have looked at the one about Bing and it seems to rely heavily on my Day by Day book. I'm a bit confused about the others involving Bing as it seems to use the same text. I've ordered the one titled "Bing Crosby: The Billion Selling Artist" to have a closer look.

It was 1966 when I was first able to play stereo recordings.  I had passed my banking exams and i used the cash award from my employers to buy a stereo radiogram. "How the West Was Won" was the first stereo album I had and all visitors used to lie on the floor between the speakers to get the full stereo effect. I don't have any vinyl any more. I sold the the lot some years ago.
I think it was 1987 was when I acquired a CD player and I remember taking it round to Ken Crossland's house to demonstrate it with my only CD "Bing Crosby Sings Again".

Biography » Gary Giddins - Volume Two » 28/1/2018 7:10 am

COMING IN NOVEMBER 2018 Gary Giddins presents the second volume of his masterful multi-part biography Bing Crosby dominated American popular culture in a way that few artists ever have. From the dizzy era of Prohibition through the dark days of the Second World War, he was a desperate nation's most beloved entertainer. But he was more than just a charismatic crooner: Bing Crosby redefined the very foundations of modem music, from the way it was recorded to the way it was orchestrated and performed. In this much-anticipated follow-up to the universally acclaimed first volume, NBCC Winner and preeminent cultural critic Gary Giddins now focuses on Crosby's most memorable period, the war years and the origin story of White Christmas. Set against the backdrop of a Europe on the brink of collapse, this groundbreaking work traces Crosby's skyrocketing career as he fully inhabits a new era of American entertainment and culture. While he would go on to reshape both popular music and cinema more comprehensively than any other artist, Crosby's legacy would be forever intertwined with his impact on the home front, a unifying voice for a nation at war. Over a decade in the making and drawing on hundreds of interviews and unprecedented access to numerous archives, Giddins finally brings Bing Crosby, his work, and his world to vivid life -- firmly reclaiming Crosby's central role in American cultural history. "The best thing to happen to Bing Crosby since Bob Hope." An image of Bing appears in the Sinatra film "The Joker Is Wild" singing "June in January". The TV movie "The Grace Kelly Story" has someone playing Bing in one scene.
