The Armenian-French chansonnier Charles Aznavour died yesterday at the age of 94.

Here’s his appearance with Bing and others on the Hollwywood Palace show of 31st December 1966...

The “others” being The Mills Brother and Dorothy Collins, with Skitch Henderson at the piano.

Thanks Malcolm.

Sorry, I didn’t realise it was a repeat. I was working in Germany last November...

In any case, tonight’s episode has been replaced by a documentary about Chas’n’Dave.

(I’m afraid non-UK readers will have to Google Chas’n’Dave..!)

Just spotted a couple of programmes on UK TV later today...

8.00pm BBC4. Gregory Porter’s Popular Voices. “The soul and jazz performer explores the soft, intimate art of crooning”. (No specific mention of Bing in the listing, but if a programme about crooning fails to include Mr Crosby, I’ll send my TV Licence back..!)

6.00pm Sky Arts. Discovering: Bing Crosby.

The Time Life DVD labels all have a standard “in-house” design, but I think I’ve got the release of “A Little Bit of Irish” Archiefit is talking about. It’s on the Varese Sarabande label and I don’t think it’s the source for the Time Life disc because although the picture quality on the TL is acceptable enough, it’s noticeably sharper and brighter on the VS release.

I think we all share your pain, Ron..!
I’ve actually given up on working my way through the discs. I found the whole process rather depressing, so I’ll wait until the dust has settled a bit and then cherry-pick some of the shows I haven’t seen before, or at least have only seen in poor quality on YouTube.
As Richard rightly observes, it seems clear that whoever was responsible for curating the set had very little interest in or knowledge of the heritage they were attempting to preserve.
It’s a pity they didn’t check the archive to see how many times Mr Crosby had graced the cover of “Time” and “Life” magazine over the decades...

I’ve just watched an absolutely fascinating and incredibly moving documentary on the UK BBC 4 channel called  “Last Days in Vietnam”, which details the evacuation  of both US personnel and Vietnamese staff and civilians from the US Embassy in Saigon as the North Vietnamese advanced on the city in April 1975.

A brief segment of the programme relates the fact that the covert signal for the start of the “official” evacuation was signalled by Bing singing “White Christmas” over the airwaves in Saigon.

I know that this incident was documented in a recent issue of “Bing” magazine, but it was fascinating to hear about the wider context and also to realise that in 1975, in an immensely tense and potentially explosive international situation, Bing Crosby still represented a unifying voice for the Amerian people.

Malcolm’s work in annotating the set on the “Bing on TV” pages of the BING website means that you can see at a glance what’s been omitted by Time-Life.

I’m certainly not sorry I bought it - there are a few things I’d never seen before and a lot of stuff I already had which is presented in much better quality here - but, like the rest of us, I was hoping for so much more.

Thanks, Richard, for trawling the web in an attempt to turn up the source of the 2002 interview...

Again, I am not in the business of defending lazy journalism, but I’m fairly sure that any obituary of Mary Carlisle will not have been a newly compiled and written article, but a topped-and-tailed, cut-and-paste job based on a framework which will have been held on file for years - if not decades.

We can only hope that Malcolm’s request for the source of the quotes yields some answers.

Does anyone happen to know the source of the 2002 interview quoted in the Telegraph obit?

I don’t read The Telegraph, but I know that some UK papers have a sort of personal response column alongside their obituary coverage.

I have no wish to play devil’s advocate, but I suppose if the journalist who wrote the obituary - or at least updated what The Telegraph already had on file - was merely quoting what he had no reason to believe was anything other than Ms Carlisle’s opinion of Bing, we can’t necessarily question his journalistic integrity.

It does seem odd, however, that apparently none of the US papers picked up on this 2002 interview.

This is only my opinion, but with regard to the possibility - or otherwise - of the eventual appearance of Vol. 3, I think there might actually be MORE of a market for a book about Bing covering his later years.

Although we might find it distasteful, the questions raised by “The Hollow Man”/“Going My Own Way”, etc., etc., do still rear their heads even now, and to have these issues dealt with by Mr Giddins in his characteristically thourough and balanced way might well find a wide enough serious readership to justify publication.

We’ll just have to wait and hope...

What’s more, further to my earlier post, it looks like I’ve got my wish and we’re getting the Caterina Valente medley..!

Can’t wait to see the whole thing.

Since these are specifically “Bing Crosby TV Specials” I don’t suppose there will be any “Hollywood Palace” material - presumably for copyright reasons...

Amongst the “many other” guests promised, I hope we get the medley with the wonderful Caterina Valente from 7th November 1963.

Anyone else got a “many others” wish list..?

Whilst looking at the e-bay listing for the Mosaic set I spotted this...

https://www.ebay.com/itm/BING-CROSBY-RECORD-CHRONOLOGY-19-SELECTIONS-FROM-1935-36-CD-449-NEW-SEALED/263747802812?_trkparms=aid%3D888007%26algo%3DDISC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D52473%26meid%3D58e4118d692f4996be90f72c9b6ba39a%26pid%3D100009%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D2%26sd%3D372335731674%26itm%3D263747802812&_trksid=p2047675.c100009.m1982

Not sure of the provenance of this particular issue, but it's well worth a look at the Crosby items in the seller's e-bay store, where there are a few interesting items on offer, including a couple of copies of the Japanese "Musical Autobiography" CD release.

A copy of Bing's first recording has appeared on e-bay!

Unfortunately, judging from the accompanying pictures, it doesn't seem to be in great condition, but this is the first time I've seen one crop up on e-bay... I've been looking for a copy for years, but given the condition I'll think I'll keep looking..!

Yes, it's a great track...

It was released as a bonus track on a CD release of the "Bing & Satchmo" album on the Essential Jazz Classics label. EJC55477. It seems to be out of print at the moment, but it's worth seeking out on eBay, etc.
It's a very nicely produced album.

I bought the Vocalion re-issue when it first came out and acquired the original London CD release a few years ago via ebay. I think I paid about £20...

I agree with Richard that some of the prices quoted on Amazon for various releases are completely opportunistic and I can only assume that the vendors are relying on the possibility that there might just be someone out there with more money than sense! I suppose occasionally they might just be right..!

I’m sure that people who are looking to complete their collections of the “Chronolgical...” series will be keeping an eye on ebay, but I’ve just spotted that there are still 24 CDs from the series on ebay.co.uk, each with a “Buy It Now” price of just £1.99 plus UK Postage costs of £1.50.

As I say, probably old news...

As well as the 45rpm BCE release of “The Night Before Christmas”, it was also available as an i-tunes download. This was the method I used to obtain it, but I’ve just had a look in the i-tunes store and unfortunately it’s no longer available.
