Here is my latest web series. On this episode five I spotlight my favorite songwriting team of Lorenz Hart and Richard Rodgers. Sorry no Bing this time around, but I hope you still enjoy it!

It was 1966 when I was first able to play stereo recordings.  I had passed my banking exams and i used the cash award from my employers to buy a stereo radiogram. "How the West Was Won" was the first stereo album I had and all visitors used to lie on the floor between the speakers to get the full stereo effect. I don't have any vinyl any more. I sold the the lot some years ago.
I think it was 1987 was when I acquired a CD player and I remember taking it round to Ken Crossland's house to demonstrate it with my only CD "Bing Crosby Sings Again".

Malcolm, that Bing Crosby Sings Again CD was the first CD my dad bought. I still have the CD in my collection. Steve Hoffman did an excellent job restoring the songs, and it had such crisp sound for 1987!

This is one of my favorite records Bing made in 1946...not the greatest tune but just catchy!

Bing was at the height of his fame in 1946 so I wanted to take a look at some of his underrated recordings of 1946. I uploaded some numbers that weren't widely available on You Tube...

Vic Damone is one of those singers I love and I have a ton of his stuff but I hardly listen to these days. I am making a tribute tape for a friend, and I am rediscovering Vic. What a voice. My favorite song he recorded was "Ruby" from the Capitol Years but he could sing anything.

Another legend gone...

Not to be negative about another artist, but does any one else not find Bob Hope funny? I have only liked Hope with Bing Crosby and in his more dramatic roles like in The Seven Little Foys and Beau James? I think there were much better comics out there. Anyone agree or am I way off?

My friend Frank Gill, who died in 2006,had every Bing radio show on reel to reel and he was starting to put the song highlights from the shows on CD when he died. Thankfully I have about five CDs of these gems. I'll have to upload some of the rare stuff sometime.

That is very interesting. Phil Harris seemed very down to earth and genuine. That's probably why Bing counted him as a close friend.

Yes and I have it on CD. I still collect 78rpm and looking for it for sentimental reasons.

I am a big fan of Phil Harris (1904-1995) and although he is a "non-singer", he did have a way with a song. I was looking for a book of 45rpms that were my stepfather's mother's records, and I found a nice 45rpm Phil made in 1968. I have not heard it before. I have heard of the songs, but as I get older these songs take on a newer meaning...

Does anyone have a copy of an original 78rpm of Bing's recording of Pennies From Heaven from 1936? I haven't been able to find this on 78rpm. This year would mark what would have been my Grandfather's 90th birthday, and I would love to get a copy.

Email me at davidlobosco@yahoo.com.

Thanks!

The Mosaic set is well done, but I have never cared for how Buddy Cole backed Bing on many of the radio recordings. John Scott Trotter was so much more better versed in how to back Bing I thought. However, I like the Mosaic set. I was able to pick up one discounted for $79 on Ebay at one point, and it is a great set to have.

Hi Malcolm - thanks for the catch. I had that date typo everywhere! My age is catching up to me.

Yes, I got them from the Spokane LP. I was digging through some of them. Great material!

Please keep the comments and suggestions coming - only one Bing recording in this episode!
