What are the results of listing?
In addition to honorific recognition, listing in the National Register has the following results for historic properties:

  • Consideration in planning for Federal, Federally licensed, and Federally assisted projects: -- Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 requires that Federal agencies allow the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation an opportunity to comment on all projects affecting historic properties either listed in or determined eligible for listing in the National Register. The Advisory Council oversees and ensures the consideration of historic properties in the Federal Planning process.
  • Eligibility for certain tax provisions -- Owners of properties listed in the National Register may be eligible for a 20% investment tax credit for the certified rehabilitation of income-producing certified historic structures such as commercial, industrial, or rental residential buildings. This credit can be combined with a straight-line depreciation period of 27.5 years for residential property and 31.5 years for nonresidential property for the depreciable basis of the rehabilitated building reduced by the amount of the tax credit claimed. Federal tax deductions are also available for charitable contributions for conservation purposes of partial interests in historically important land areas or structures.
  • Consideration of historic values in the decision to issue a surface mining permit where coal is located in accordance with the Surface Mining Control Act of 1977; and
  • Qualification for Federal grants for historic preservation, when funds are available.

The California State Historical Resources Commission voted this week to nominate the Bing Crosby Building in West Hollywood for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.

I walk/drive by this building several times a week. It is in quite a bit of disrepair so I am thrilled to see that SOMEONE cares!

I read his obit in the NYTimes and I never knew Mr. White Bread, square image of a guy like Vic had such a wild life, mob hanging him out a window, ex wives offing themselves, married many many times.  His image was that of such a nice guy without a scandal, but apparently he lived a wild life.

That could be said about many entertainers and public figures. You might just be getting "close to the bone" here. http://cdn.boardhost.com/emoticons/tongue.png

If I had to choose one Vic album to recommend to newbies, it would be "The Game of Love" from 1959 on the Columbia label. Recorded with a small jazz combo...very intimate and his voice is smooth as silk.

Memories are flying now....He was the first person I saw "live" in Las Vegas. It was 1972 (I was underage!!!) and it was at the Riviera where he opened for Rickles. I barely remember the performance now but I do know that it impressed me enough to buy some of his albums. Dean Martin (part owner of the hotel at the time) was in the audience as well and Rickles ripped him apart mercilessly.

Saw Vic and Regis Philbin having lunch at an outdoor cafe on Sunset Plaza about 10 or 12 years ago. I nodded to Vic as I passed by. They were still at the same table when I was returning to my office and Vic again nodded. I stopped and said " I want you to know that I still play the records!" Vic beamed from ear-to-ear and (quite unexpectedly) got out of his chair and came and shook my hand and thanked me for the kind words. He was an absolute class act all the way around.

Like all of us, I am thrilled to read this. But will not actually get excited about it until there is firm information, cost, shipping date and confirmation that this will indeed happen.

Kevin,

Quite easily! I have a ton of Christmas music that I only play for a few weeks each year and now is the time to enjoy it. (I shall take a day out on Tuesday however to celebrate the 102nd anniversary of Mr. S's birth.)

And, after all, I have waited all these years to hear the "new" music on these CD's, so what's a couple of more weeks? I will enjoy them along with  a bunch of audiophile LP's I gifted myself with for my birthday & Christmas this year. 2018 will begin QUITE filled with "new" music.

BTW, by pre-ordering the CD's on Amazon, I saved enough money on the purchase price that by the time they shipped, I basically got "New Tricks" for free! (NOT meant to rub in anything to my European friends...just passing it along.)  The list price on Amazon on shipping day was just hair under $10.00 more than when I preordered 10/13.

Bing just arrived at my doorstep this early Saturday morning! Both look gorgeous in production and visual content. I am immersed in Christmas music now so I shall add these to my Christmas gifts and enjoy after the turn of the New Year.

Initial reports from around the web so far (though sparse) are all VERY positive as to the music!

So this is great news but at the same time DARN!

I have really expanded my Crosby collection from a couple of albums to maybe a couple of dozen over the last 12 months! One of the albums I bought were a Twofer on CD of this New Tricks and Fine Old Chestnuts... and now I wonder if I'll need to buy both again

BUY THEM! If they are anything like the previous official releases from the group, they will be in superb sound and have excellent liner notes and annotations.

Plus, who REALLY knows what precious masters were lost in that huge fire years ago at Universal Studios. No one has ever "come clean" with what was lost.

Great One News with The Groaner included!!    Good news everyone, Time Life has just come out with a 10 DVD set that has 27 different color Jackie Gleason Shows from the '60's.  Why am I mentioning this here?   Because one of the 27 episodes has BING as guest star.   I saw an ad for it and it showed Bing singing "Don't Fence Me In" and "Thanks A Million".   If the Bing Crosby Enterprises or whatever they call themselves won't release any Bing TV specials at least Time Life will.
Here's the website you can order it from:
https://timelife.com/products/the-jackie-gleason-show-in-color?gclid=CM7h_vLf79YCFQpLDQoduNoO_Q

Do these shows include Jackie's incredible opening monologues? If so, I AM IN!!!!! I have been looking for these online for ages...nothing! I loved that show as a kid and remember his great monologues the most. Sitting in his chair with a table next to him for his "tea" and ashtray.   GREAT STUFF!!!

ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!! The word from people within the Sinatra UMe projects (which have suddenly stopped) was that Bing was not selling and that all future projects were suspended. Obviously that is not the case and I apologize for the incorrect information. No one is happier than me that these new CD's are coming soon.

It also gives me hope that UMe is going to remain active with releasing future Sinatra product.

This takes a tad of the sadness and melancholy out if this weekend's anniversary remembrances.

I have been spending October by listening to Bing almost exclusively. The significance of next Saturday has not been lost by me.

But, sadly, the words from those near UMe are that all future official Bing releases are on an indefinite hold. They are $$$$$ driven and Bing hasn't sold well enough for them since they took over his catalogue.

And it looks like Mr. S is not far behind with a stoppage of new product from UMe. There is still a  glimmer of hope from his Columbia catalogue from Sony...but just a glimmer.

Ah ha!!! So he took the last touring show with the whole ensemble to Vegas? That is quite interesting. Perhaps breaking it in to take on the road to larger venues?  THANKS.

But, I was thinking of the "Golden Age" of Vegas (1955-1968) and thinking that Bing would not be the gambler's draw in that setting at that time.
